The Ministry of Defence has published a ten-year breakdown of training activity at the Land Regional Hub Germany, outlining how many field training exercises have taken place at the site each year.
The figures were released in response to a written parliamentary question from James Cartlidge MP, who asked how many exercises had been conducted at the hub in each of the last ten financial years. In his reply, Defence Minister Al Carns clarified that exercises are recorded by calendar year rather than financial year.
According to the data provided, 32 field training exercises were held at the Land Regional Hub Germany in 2016. This fell to 26 in 2017 and 22 in 2018. In 2019, the total dropped to 11 exercises. The lowest figure in the ten-year period came in 2020, when five exercises were recorded. Activity increased to eight exercises in 2021, before rising again to 11 in 2022 and 12 in 2023.
In 2024, the number of exercises climbed to 16, and in 2025 the total reached 23. This represents the highest annual figure since 2017, though still below the 2016 peak. Overall, the data shows a decline in exercise numbers between 2016 and 2020, followed by a gradual and sustained increase through to 2025. The Land Regional Hub Germany continues to host a regular programme of British field training exercises, with more than four times as many exercises conducted in 2025 as in 2020.

The MoD rebranding Brigade have been busy again?
Land Regional Hub.
And in Oman, Global Hub Oman.
“Hub” is clearly in.
Will they name satellite sites “Spokes”?
Is the British Army going through a rebrand as the Britih Army? 😉
A new cap badge will be created for the over 55years with a walking stick proudly displayed.
It was foolish for Cameron to pull troops out of Germany, it damaged recruitment which was already failing after being outsourced to Crapita.
Part of the MOD’s ‘Retreat from East of Channel Islands’ plan.
Pete, the withdrawal from Germany started in 1982 when 2 Div moved back to the UK. Of course the major withdrawal happened after the Options for Change SDR of summer 1990 marked the end of the Cold War and the ‘garrison’ came down to a single division quite quickly. Certainly a single division stayed in Germany for a long time, but we were always going to reduce to a skeleton presence. I am not sure that a posting to Germany in recent years was a major recruiting draw – many bemoaned the lack of jobs for spouses and the distance back to the UK for connecting with wider family in the case of pads and from girlfriend/boyfriend in the case of the single guys and girls.
Very few wanted to go to the UK when my Regiment was rotated back, so many put in for transfer request to stay they were never processed and found in the draw in the battery office to hide the embarrassment when it was packed up.
Personally after 9 years in Osnabruk (4th) I couldn’t wait to get back. No more Active Edge, no more Honne for live firing, lucky if you got down to Grafenwöhr for a change. Aldershot with 5 AB Bde was probably my favourite posting.
We were in Catterick in 75 and were arms plotted to take over 20 Fd Regt in Hong Kong, then some bright spark in the MOD came up with the idea of putting 20 Fd into suspended Animation and cancelling Hong Kong to all future RA Regiments. Needless to say that pleased a lot of people.
Same. When I joined the two postings everyone wanted out of depot was 16AA or Germany, and when the unit was returned to the UK everyone was pretty miffed.
