British soldiers have successfully brought down swarms of drones in Wales using a new UK-made radiofrequency weapon, in what defence officials describe as a landmark step in modernising the country’s air defence capabilities.
The experimental system, known as a Radiofrequency Directed Energy Weapon (RF DEW), uses invisible high-frequency waves to disrupt the internal electronics of airborne threats. During the trials, the Army managed to simultaneously detect, track and neutralise multiple drones in a single engagement.
According to the Ministry of Defence, over 100 drones were neutralised during the series of tests – the largest anti-drone swarm trials the British Army has conducted to date.
With an estimated operating cost of just 10p per shot, the RF DEW offers a low-cost alternative to traditional missile-based systems. Unlike conventional jamming, the system can physically disable targets at ranges of up to one kilometre, making it effective even against hardened or unresponsive drones.
The system was developed by a consortium led by Thales UK as part of ‘Team Hersa’, a collaboration between Defence Equipment & Support and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. The programme has received over £40 million in government investment and supports more than 135 jobs across Northern Ireland and the South East of England.
“This significant experiment exemplifies the strength of British innovation – driven by our home-grown industry, technology firms and scientific talent,” said Defence Procurement Minister Maria Eagle MP. “We continue to strengthen our defence sector, adding more cutting-edge capabilities to keep the UK secure at home and strong abroad.”
The system was operated by soldiers from 106 Regiment Royal Artillery, with Sergeant Mayers becoming the first British soldier to defeat drones using a radiofrequency weapon.
“RF DEW is an exciting concept. We found the demonstrator quick to learn and easy to use,” said Sgt Mayers. “With improvements on range and power, this would be a great asset to Layered Air Defence.”
The trials come as frontline combat – particularly in Ukraine – has seen the rapid emergence of drone swarms as a major threat. UK Defence Intelligence estimates that Ukrainian forces had to repel attacks from over 18,000 drones in the last year alone.
Thales UK leads the industrial side of the demonstrator, employing around 100 engineers and manufacturing specialists in Northern Ireland, with an additional 30

Has that not been the stated aim of every review, but if they were honest its just a pennies saving exercise.
Defence Digital, and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, is still evolving.
Doug, DSTL is still evolving? Its been going since July 2001 and was spun off from DRA, which had very long antecedents (RARDE etc).
Pretty sure there is a new category of bots on this article that scrapes sound bites from the and repeats them in the comments.
@SailorBoy
Yes, I had just clocked that on another article. New poster names saying words that make no sense.
That’s not far off the truth, micro drones are inevitably going to become a core support weapon at section level and therefore a section will need the ability to engage and destroy them.
Quick send it to Ukraine so it can be left on the battle field and captured and Russia and China and Iran can make their own. A bit like most of the up to date kit Ukraine as lost or just left lying about. MIA1/Lepord2 A5/6, Javlin/M2/3 A2, NLAW, ETC
Up to date kit, like the 80s kit you reference later? Pull the other one Ivan

ivan, wow when did my name change and yes we sent kit better than what Russia had, more up to date and now that have access to it lie Lepord 2 Ammo/M1A1 Ammo which is more advance than what they were using. Javlin! so yeah not all 80’s kit try checking what was sent The Russians have already agree the Bradley is way better than their kit, better protected and its ammo is better now they learn from that. Abrams has advanced Armour compared to what Russia has. As with all on here who support Ukraine you fail to see the damage and cost this war is having on one our own Army and two the lost some of edge the west had over russian kit.
Russia has proven time and again that they are capable of designing equally advanced kit; their issue is with actually building the stuff they design and this changes nothing.
And what did Russia lose.. there are two sides to each equation.
russia can look at it all they want, they cant do shit because they’re a backwards country. they aren’t getting the DU ammo the US uses. look at the video of russia taking apart an ATACMs fuse and INS kit, despite it being built in the 80s russia views it like alien technology. they literally say its impossible for anyone to mass produce lmao. russia will always be a backwards trailer park strapping chinese temu ‘upgrades’ to their soviet relics.

So Martin you are suggesting sending it to Ukraine and then complaining about sending stuff to Ukraine. Yes I think we can see your very unsubtle attempt at misdirection as Levi points out. You really must do better to earn those precious roubles, or are you just spreading inane lies and misrepresentations of the truth for fun.
So lets give them all our kit, spend money we do not have, run our Army down and our ammo stocks. For what? they lost more ground than Russia asked for. How has this war helped Ukraine? Russia has access to kit that not totally up to date was better than what they had.
I love the pro Ukraine on here who do not get it, i’m not Russian never want to be.
How ever childish comments about being Russian do change what is. Ukraine can not win, Russian can not win, its a mess. I admit totally not Ukraine’s fault but they lost more than might had to give up, how is that better? Westen weapons are being back reversed in Ruissa/China and likely Iran, And think that is a good thing.
That’s news! Have the Orcs captured all of the oblasts they claim to have annexed then? As of this morning they are nowhere near doing so.Since 2014 theOrcs (red army)has managed to occupy 19% of Ukraine and since 2022 have suffered massive casualties and equipment losses ( all documented if you bother to look) trying to take what they have! If you don’t want to be called a Russian troll don’t spout bloody nonsense🙄
oh dear an other rant from some clueless arm chair hero. Ukraine has lost more ground than Russia asked for before the war not the same ground Russia wanted agreed just more of it. Ukraine is not and will not be strong enough to push the Russians out. The Russians have had huge losses but they do not care. A prolonged war favours Russia.
Nonsense its bending the truth or avoiding it. Its stalemate We as nation can not afford the war, our Army has suffered because of it and we can not replace what we gave away. So what to do, rant and rave and call people names or look at the facts. As a nation we can not carry on as we are there is no money for it and we given as much kit as could scrap up.
I do not take sides i just point things out, how are to keep funding this war, how are we to replace the kit we gave away?. We can’t even warm our old people at winter.

“they lost more ground than Russia asked for.” How is this possible when Russia has yet to set foot in all the territory they demanded?
Russia asked Ukraine politely to hand over territory some time ago? Must have missed that.
Russia is a fraction as good as the Soviets were, yet the Soviets left Aghanistan. There’s more than one way to lose a war.
Most people don’t understand the difference between battles won vs wars lost, there is a very big difference. If you look at the US.. profoundly good at winning battles.. infact its armed forces are battle winning machines.. but it’s not been great at winning wars since 1945.
So where are you actually from Martin if you’re not Russian?
England, what stupid question, an opinion thats not the same as yours is not a crime. Its simply an opinion not saying I am right but its about getting a point across and chatting about it. Being informed or corrected. No Russia has not got all the bits of ground it wanted but has got by area more ground that it asked for. At a very heavy price.
With out the US the west can not support Ukraine enough to change any thing. We let every thing run down held not enough ammo stocks etc to save money and now its going to take at least 2 more years to fix that.
Its stalemate and we are too skint to replace what we sent so what do we do?
Give it up Martin, it’s pretty obvious from yo out posts that you’re not English. The sentence structure is that of someone for whom English is a second language. Given your ludicrous comments about equipping Ukraine it’s reasonable to guess your first language is Russian.
Nice try Ivan.
There has been a Martin in the comments sections for some years now, who likes a bit of a rant and is ex RA. I’m still undecided if this is the same one!
I think you are a bit unfair on Martin. I am sure that Maryin would agree with a statement that Putin is a sad little man with an inferiority complex. Little man syndrome if you like. Then there is the question of now we have the high court ruling which toilet can Putin use.
I wouldn’t worry the Russians don’t understand modern electronics.
Sounds like a great piece of kit
Cats out of the bag now ,can’t we keep anything of value out of the public eye , Like our invisible planes, ships and tanks . Oh wait that’s defence cuts.knowing the MOD they’ll be getting the cheapest bidder too build them oh wait that will be China .

Everyone is investing in technology of this nature so it’s not revealing anything of help to our enemies per se. Sadly we don’t have an Area 51 immense area in the middle if no where to demonstrate these things, though in reality stealth and mysterious aircraft have been captured there via satellite but what does that really tell an enemy other than a Country has a programme you know the have anyway. The US gives some basic information about its hypersonic weapons aims and capabilities and demonstrations for example. It’s discovering the exact nature of the technology and innovations and exact capabilities that enable any particular platform to be successful that would be the important part to keep secret. Indeed often showing you have such capabilities is in itself a method of deterrence. I would hope prevention of espionage to discover those deeper technical details are robust and the priority.
Would be interesting as an aside to know where the components come from and how secure the supply train is once up it enters full scale production, that’s probably a greater concern especially if analysing certain components could give a potential enemy the ability to assess capabilities and perhaps help counter them.
This should be classified – why oh why are the MOD releasing this info.
Nothing classified has been released. Anti drone capability is nothing unknown about. How it actually works will be classified.

It’s existence and performance should be classified – anything that provides potential foe J2s with intelligence is of value. Announcing its existence and trumping its success and the scenario it operated in can be of huge use in developing TTPs. To think the Chinese can’t exploit this for intelligence is naive
It’ll likely be at the near top of Chinese/ Russian RFI list
know China they likely have the plans for it already. They are very good at that. A lot their kit looks a toal copy of some one else. And they are enought commie/lefties spies in the West to help them but every one with brain knows that its just hushed up as we are crap secrecy.
Indeed just so stupid demonstrating technology to see if it works for fear of someone noticing that you are demonstrating it. You don’t see the Russians or Chinese demonstrating prototype platforms do you… oh hang on a minute they just flew an unknown stealth bomber over a residential area for everyone to photograph and put online. Their EMALS tests have been visible from a distance for years even the base methodology they have been using has been published and critiqued in the West, images of its latest drone ship revealed. The US has been demonstrating similar anti drone weaponry in recent years, what new is this revealing to our enemies? Specifics are the secret not the known generalisations, should we not know that Tempest exists as a programme? How would that work?

A number of points
Firstly, it was realised a few years ago that not giving out basic information tends to do more harm to your own side as folk need the information in support of long term equipment planning, which impacts long term doctrinal development, etc. The details of these classified programs will only be known by a very limited number of people.
Secondly, our enemies will be developing their own capabilities as well as spying on our programs. This and the fact that the basic physics of this system is the same as that used in any RF transmitter means that the very limited information given above will come as no surprise to peer threat countries.
Thirdly, the information released merely tells our potential enemies stuff they already know but it demonstrates that we are confident enough in where we are to push ahead to have built a working trials system which is not cheap to do. This raises the possibility, and doubts, in our potential enemy’s mind that an operational system isn’t that far from being developed.
Fourthly, the information above is very vague indeed. The 1km range against 100 drones is not exactly a precise scientific statement. How big were the drones, how fast were they flying, what was their course relative to the firing unit, etc. Hardened drone? How well hardened are we talking about here..? All very vague and which basically says we are working on this and making progress and frankly not very much more. I would also point out the 1km figure is probably a ‘ball park’ number. Accurate enough to tell planners that the system is currently very short ranged but is promising. After all the RN has been saying its frigates can do better than 28knots for years. What does that mean? 29, 30, 32 or 36 a la pre-WW2 destroyer speeds?
All of which should reassure our own people, and our allies, that we are not completely defenseless and that work is on going to meet the very new and highly publicisied threat of drones. Reassurance of our own people is as important as deterring our enemies because if the home front collapses then I don’t care how big our armed forces are, they will soon lose without support from home.
Cheers CR
Wise points, a very good read and correct.
@Martin,
Thank you. It is a complicated space and to some extent driven by the circumstances at any given time. Deterrence, reassurance, etc. are soft points and difficult to judge. Glad I don’t have that job…
Cheers CR
The Chinese will already be developing their own version. To think they won’t is plain ridiculous. Should we keep every single thing hidden? You are the type that will moan and say the UK is well behind with certain capabilities just because you haven’t heard about them. Then moan about an article like this.
It’s called deterrent.. you can be the most powerful armed force in the world and essentially unbeatable, but if you don’t communicate this you end up in wars.. out armed forces first and essentially single most important job is to deter war.. for that they MUST undertake the 3 Cs of deterrence.. communication, capability and Credibility.. essentially you must have the ability, then you show your willingness to use that capability and use communication to explain to your enemy exactly how and why their armed forces and nation will burn…
When a nation does not do the 3 Cs it’s either
1) stupid, weak and going to end up attacked..
2) actually seriously planning an unilateral attack and major war against an enemy.
If we take China as a case study..
China’s was the only major nation during pax Britannia to actually choose to go to war with the British empire.. the reason was because it literally had no idea what it was facing, because of a balance of not affecting trade..the RN did not patrol or secure waters around china..other potential enemies such as the US spent the 19c being stared at down the cannon barrels of RN battleship squadrons.. so China ended up going to war with a nation it could not beat… because for political and trade reasons China was the only nation the British empire did not exert the 3Cs on.
If you look at today Russia spends all its time telling the world in great detail how great its weapons are.. why to put NATO of deciding to stamp on the problem..
China on the other hand goes to great lengths to hide the size of its navy and its naval building programs… why because it does not to present the world with the fact it has the second largest blue water navy in the world as well as the largest littoral navy in the world… because its planning to attack its enemies it’s not trying to deter them…
Guess we should be teaching chinese in uk classrooms, might as well get ahead of what changes will eventualy come into play, China plays the long game, setting firm roots in trade, expansion of ownership, example they tried to scuttle Scunthorpe British Steel,no doubt a test subject !
China knows her strength, yet shows a lot of restraint, Taiwan is a sore point, a thorn in her side so to speak, China rattles her saber over this small island just to distract the world from her moves in the buisness world, there will come a day when China can bring the world to its knee’s without firing a single shot !
Food for thought !
What’s classified about the photo and the press release? There’s far more in the public domain about the Typhoon and F35 and they are far more formidable to our enemies.
It’s a new capability in an evolving battlefield –
This article is lacking a few details. One kilometre range OK, but what is the power level of this system? Surely thats not restricted information. With energy weapons the bigger the better.
Neither this or Dragonfire have made public the power requirements or outputs.
They are both scalable, so the energies involved in testing have little relation to what will be deployed on the front lines.

This is already outdated, as I assume it’s just a jammer. Russia has switched to using fibre optic drones to avoid jamming and AI ones are being fielded by Ukraine.
It isn’t a jammer. It’s essentially a directed energy weapon that burns out electronics. Similar to the laser they’re building for ships, but with high freq radio waves instead.
Why would you assume something wrong that’s explained in the article.
Also fiber optic drones have not replaced radio controlled drones, since fiber optics have a limited range, and increased cost.
Maybe if you read the article before commenting then you wouldn’t embarrass yourself by making incorrect assumptions…
Just a suggestion 🤷🏻♂️
Haven’t the Russians been doing this to US embassies for a while?
Yes, 1980 I recall, microwave weaponry directed at the US embassy in Moscow.
Does the Havana incident count 2016?
Of course, the 80s one was the incident I’m most familiar with. There will be plenty, on both sides.
There are a whole range of “non lethal” weapons that have been developed, as I’m sure you know.
I think they stated its okay to be used in open area’s but in built up area’s it will have issues
It might be 10p per shot, but still looks like a big, expensive and cumbersome piece of kit. I think something along the lines of the m45 would be a more effective (and cheaper) solution to localized drones.
Need to be a bit more specific on what a M45 is? It could be a derivative of the Colt 45, a hand held machine gun or what I think you are suggesting, the 50 cal anti-aircraft quad mount. The problem with the 50 cal round is that it does not have a time fuse or a proximity fuse, so you need to use a load of rounds to guarantee a hit.
BAe’s 3P fused ammunition has Pre-fragmented, Programmable and Proximity modes, however, the smallest shell it can be fitted to is 40mm. A 40mm with the 3P fused HE, will be significantly more effective that the quad 50 in taking out drones.
I have a feeling what is being shown is a prototype, as there’s a few things on it that are considered old tech.
What part of “experimental” and “demonstrator”, from the article, did you fail to grasp?…
Production units are always smaller, cheaper, and more robust than the proof-of-concept demonstrators and prototypes.

Jolly good, now start ordering the ABM version of Aster 30.
That’s all fine and good, until the enemy comes up with a counter-measure like hardened electronics or some kind of EM/RF shielding.
With every measure, there’s usually a counter-measure.
Nothing wrong with that. If people want to buy drones they need extra antenna or fibre optics to avoid jamming, they need RF shielding for the microwave weapons, and they need reflective surfaces and heat sinks for laser weapons. These all add costs and compromises in different ways.
I hope this wasn’t 100 swarms of one.
🙂
In the video uploaded by the MOD they killed 2 at once that were a few meters apart. It’s good that you don’t need nearly the amount of targeting accuracy or stability since the cone of effectiveness is pretty big. That is one of the most difficult parts of laser and gun systems.
Why are people on here moaning about this ?
Seriously chaps.
Because some Brits are only ever happy when they’re moaning. It’s possibly the worst trait we have, negatively.

For taking it up the arse?
If that’s what you’re into 🤷🏻♂️
Yet another way to take down drones, albeit a developmental system. I wonder how many methods and anti-drone equipment/weapons there is now in western armies to mitigate or destroy drones? Perhaps the drone fanboys who predict the end of the every key platform from the tank to the aircraft carrier might now take stock, and take a measured view of them. The drone is fallible and so it is no wonder weapon.
Hello Graham, this is just evolution…. for every threat that gets developed, a counter threat is often hot on it’s heels. People just see the now and get all funny about it.
Fantastic defensive weapon but why do we constantly give the game away and tell potential enemies. Gives them the opportunity to adapt
Can anyone advise me how British anything designed by a consortium led by Thales UK is? I remember the days of Plessey and Marconi, and appreciate that Racal was bought by French giant Thompson before becoming Thales. So is Thales UK a collective of lorry drivers and warehouse workers in Belfast with all the design and engineering completed across the channel? Or is it a separate unit within the parent group? If the MoD invests in research, will it have secure and exclusive use of any proceeds, or is it all copyright of the French company (who I believe has the French state as a leading shareholder?)
According to Thales U.K., they have 16 sites and 7,000 employees – so probably not just ‘warehouse workers in Belfast’.
Thales probably tapped into the plethora of product design and specialist engineering companies capable of deep tech in the U.K. These companies don’t manufacture products, but they have the specialist knowledge in various fields to plug the capability gaps of giant’s like Thales. It’s one area the U.K. leads in, but gets very little public credit if any.
Unless the MoD goes against industry practice, as it commissioned the work from Thales, it will own all IP. That doesn’t mean that Thales can’t license it back or used the experience to develop something that doesn’t impinge on the MoD’s IP.

Why not just google it, that way you’ll know and not have to type such silly stuff about Lorry drivers and warehouse workers in Belfast ?
As with many defence companies that have either been bought up by a foreign company or merged into another. There are some developments that remain U.K. eyes only. So even if the company such as Marconi, later becomes part of Leonardo. There is a clear demarcation of intellectual property that can’t be shared with the parent company. The MoD has a massive say in what can be shared outside the U.K.
So does this make the likes of Dragonfire obsolete already, or are they designed to be used together? They seem to have the same function and range but this can take down swarms much faster?
Obviously not 🤦🏻♂️
BTW if you look on social media the MoD has published an explainer video of this in action. If fitted on a ship you’d only see the turret. Everything else in the photo above is housing for the weapons stations and operators, radar, etc.
Easy, it would be like lobbing a grenade into a crowd, the issue is can they take out an individual drone
Yes, the system uses a search and tracking radar to find the drones. Then the operator can use a digital camera to pick out individual drones. If you ignore the yagi antenna on the face of the box line structure. This box I believe holds a phased array microwave emitter. Which means a highly directional beam can be formed, then used against an individual target/drone. But can also be quickly switched from one target to another. The US Army has a similar system mounted on a Stryker.
To give them all credit, you have to admit, for such a tiny country, the UK has one hell of a global track record when it comes to scientists and thinkers in general.
Tiny by Geography.
That is all.
What would it be like against a swarm of a million. Perhaps the enemy may send 1000s of cheap dummy drones then send in terain recognition drones that don’t need outside operators only a camera to see where it is going. If internal electronics are screened then this would have no effect if the range is only 1km then a drone flying say 2km high could just go into free fall for the target using simple gyros to stay on target. For the modified hobby drones used in Ukraine and some military drones may help tho for a lot of them simple quick deploy nets would sort most out like they have around golf courses using rockets or even ww2 style Barage balloon. May help slow an attack and buy some time. Tho nice to see innovation
Probably easier to call in a B52 carpet bombing mission on the football fields where this million string swarm is being assembled. Not rush either, would take weeks to assemble.
Not so sure. It reminds me of inflatable tanks on the clifftops of southern England. In fact, I’m sure I spotted a guy line attached to one of those 🐕 🐶 tie-outs you’d see outside the tents and snob-hired chalets at Butlins in the late 70s? Search the image and see if you can spot it! Name the row and column numbers at the centre point where the tie-down meets the tie-out and you’ve essentially won the MOD equivalent of the football pools.
Or…
Just carry on moaning, talking down the country, disparaging her advancements whilst running around screaming “we’re all doomed, I tell ya! Doomed!!!”
🙄
