Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has warned that Russia is becoming more reckless and dangerous as its military performance in Ukraine weakens, speaking after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg.

Cooper said the post-Cold War peace dividend was over. “Any lingering cosy assumptions about our defence and security are gone. So too is the post-Cold War peace dividend. That’s why we need to keep increasing our defence and security capabilities and maintain our support for Ukraine.”

She described a broadening threat picture from Moscow. “Russia is now under huge pressure from Ukraine’s military response and from economic challenges but that is making them more unpredictable with escalating attacks on Ukrainian civilians, increasing hybrid threats across the continent, and reports of drone incursions. The threat from Russia is increasing on air, land, sea, space, cyber and information warfare.”

Russian jet dangerously close to British military aircraft

Cooper’s remarks came days after the Ministry of Defence confirmed that two Russian jets had intercepted an unarmed RAF Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea, in what the MoD described as the most dangerous Russian action against a UK Rivet Joint since 2022. A Russian Su-35 flew close enough to the British aircraft to trigger its emergency systems, including disabling the autopilot, while a Su-27 made six passes in front of the aircraft, closing to within six metres of its nose.

Cooper said NATO remained the most successful defensive alliance in history but that its continued development was essential. “NATO is the most successful defensive alliance in history and now we need to keep building a stronger Europe within NATO. The safety, stability and prosperity of our citizens depends upon it.”

  1. I’ve gained $17,240 only within four weeks by comfortably working part-time from home. Immediately when I had lost my last business, I was very troubled and thankfully I’ve located this project now in this way I’m in a position to receive thousand USD directly from home. Each individual certainly can do this easy work & make more greenbacks online by visiting

  3. Hmmm … anyone else believe the Foreign Secretary should have an earnest discussion w/ the Prime Minister and Rachel from Accounts re Defence budget?

    • Perhaps both will become more reckless as they weaken. Who knows, maybe they might recklessly fund Defence properly.

      • Jon,
Any credible rumors re timing of the public release of the DIP? Maximum potential PR benefit for HMG could be the release prior to NATO Summit in July. 🤔🤞

        • Suggestions from the Sky News defence correspondent that Starmer will soon announce £18b over the next 4 years. That’s £10b less than the SDR estimated need. Assuming service numbers rise a little, what equipment can realistically be delivered and brought into service in 4 years: T45 upgrades, a few new frigates, Boxers, Ajax, RCH155, Typhoon radars, StormBreaker, ammunition and missile stocks e.g. Storm Shadow, UAVs, USVs, UUVs, GBAD? A lot of money will be needed to continue funding FSS and sub builds and GCAP. £18b won’t go far. MRSS, T83, more fast jets and Hawk replacement all kicked into the long grass?

        • Nothing credible that I’ve heard. As Paul said, someone is back-channel briefing the £18bn figure to multiple news outlets, but we have long passed when the DIP timing was anything to do with MOD or the Defence industry. You’ll need to fish for credible rumors in a different pool. Timing might become about leadership infighting and your guess is as good as mine.

  4. Putin is under pressure in Ukraine and at home where reports indicate bunker mentality behaviour- a sign of vulnerability. This is all good news. The West is winning. But cornered animals are dangerous.

  5. I thought these Rivet Joints were meant to have two Typhoons flying with them after a similar incident in 2022?

      • AMRAAMs no as that would require a fire control radar. ASRAAMs could in theory given they can be slaved to a helmet for target acquisition. Still complicated though. Nimrods could carry AIM9s but that was based on the Nimrods rather good turning rate and put fire n forget.

  6. Has she stopped talking yet?
I skimmed past any of her words in the article, utterly sick of talking heads, a view I’m sure shared by many.

  7. Well foreign Secretary stop moaning about it and put more money in defence .Rather than playing the same old record we’ve invested more money in Defence since the cold war. At the end of the day we all know your feeding the British public smoke and mirrors . She probably doesn’t realise how many people in the UK do understand defence and know what we’re talking about . The only thing she knows is Cuts.Come to think about it when she was home Secretary her famous words Smash the gang’s 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

  8. A clown fed on shit and Ukrainian propaganda.
They on had 3 weeks of resources left in 2022!
Every red line the west has had is now crossed, how soon until European regulars are fielded??

  9. The bluff and bluster just continues. Stormin’ Starmer was supposed to be announcing £18bn uplift in spending this week but all he did was suggest the Champions League final should be free to view, what a total lemon that man is,
