Defence spending in Scotland up over previous year

New figures today show Ministry of Defence expenditure with industry and commerce in Scotland in 2021/22 was £2.01 billion, up from the previous year.

The expenditure on the defence industry in Scotland has experienced a year-over-year increase, reaching just under £2 billion, equating to a per capita amount of £370. On a national level, the defence expenditure for the United Kingdom is recorded at £21.1 billion, translating to an average of £310 per individual.

The specific figures can be found here.

The investment in defence-related shipbuilding in Scotland is expected to sustain a full order book until the 2030s.

In the 2021/2022 fiscal year, construction began on the first of five new Type 31 Royal Navy frigates – HMS Venturer. This initiative is projected to support around 2,500 jobs at Babcock’s Rosyth dockyard, as well as create 150 apprenticeships, while also supporting employment opportunities through the United Kingdom’s supply chain.

The steel cutting ceremony for the second frigate, HMS Active, took place recently at Rosyth, and the vessels will be developed into 6,000-tonne warships over the coming months. The construction of the Type 31 frigates is part of a larger investment in UK shipyards and industry, exceeding £4 billion, as outlined in the UK Government’s National Shipbuilding Strategy.

The Type 31 frigates are larger than the current Type 23s they will replace but slightly shorter and lighter than HMS Glasgow and the seven other planned Type 26 frigates also being built for the fleet by BAE Systems in Govan. The Type 26 frigates will focus on anti-submarine warfare, leaving the Type 31 frigates to carry out patrols wherever they are needed, including counter-terrorism/drug smuggling patrols in the Indian Ocean and assistance in disaster response.

Over the past couple of decades, Scotland has also delivered six Type 45 destroyers, two aircraft carriers, and five offshore patrol vessels.

In 2021/2022, defence investment also included the expansion of operational support facilities for the Poseidon P8 submarine hunter aircraft at RAF Lossiemouth and continued investment in facilities for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet on the Clyde.

The Ministry of Defence’s expenditure supports around 12,700 private sector jobs in Scotland, in addition to the 10,400 MoD staff based in Scotland. The money spent by the MoD directly supports around 25,000 jobs across the United Kingdom, as well as approximately 20,000 jobs supported indirectly

I am still aghast at the Ferguson Ferry catastrophe.

When will CALMAL finally get the Glen Sannox?

The ship was launched in 2017 by Nicola Sturgeon with a pretend bulbous bow naff wiring etc etc

It was reported in October last year that the ultra green LNG engines would not be used because of a parts sourcing problem and will run on diesel.

Don’t know if it will sail on May as predicted….seems to be above the technical skill of the yard, which was accustomed to building smaller ferries…the dual fuel appears to be a problem…John Swinney has already authorised £15/20 million last week..dear god it will be a catastrophe if it doesn’t meet the deadlines…

SNP standard operating procedure is to deny any fact that disagrees with their ideological dogma.

You are wrong there.

There are no facts other than SNP facts. Everything else is Trumpian fake news!

Read in the voice of the old M&S advert ‘This is not just a fact: it is an SNP fact.

SNP: great with facts’

I borrowed the last bit from the COOP campaign around the time the COOP bank was going bust it was it inhaling white dust?

The real headline is Scotland gets the same amount of defence spending as its share of the UK population. Every ******* who comes on hear and bangs on about Scotland getting more than its shares and lamenting the surface ship building being down outside of England only to placate Scottish independence should have to read this.

If ship building was not in Scotland the spending In Scotland would be substantially lower and something else would need to take its place. It’s hard to know if this is just total contract values or if it actually takes into account that different bits of the ships contents get made all over the uk and beyond.
Different areas of the uk specialise in different areas which is a good thing. Using higher education centres to help with research in local industries can help develop new items and ways of working.

Despite all the SNP counterfactual claims, Scotland commissions reports, holds parliamentary enquiries and makes demands of military spending in its region. That’s a good thing for the people it serves. It’s what it should be doing to make sure they get their fair share and keep it. I wish the other national regions did the same.

Yorkshire and the Humber has the same population as Scotland, but only receives 16% of Scotland’s military spend: £330m or £60 per person. That’s what not shouting gets you.

Once again a workforce powered by IRN BRU the reason we build the best warships in Scotland 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Alas Virgin cola and all the other beverage failures from doon sooth are unfortunately the reason Englandshire ain’t building ships for RN .

True story dat 😉

At least snp ferguson marines yard is full with scotish ferries being built. Not that much is happening there as they seem to have forgotten how they should proceed in the building of the craft.Never mind. Turkey will be glad of the work.

The government also sent the new Mersey Ferry contract to Holland. A lot of workers at Cammell Laird are not happy. I don’t blame them, considering they are on the other side of the river to the Mersey Ferry building.

Just because they had to provide an invitation to tender across Europe, doesn’t mean they had to pick them. And Yes, I am aware of the Unites’ response to the situation. I also tried to contact the City Authority but completely ignored the e-mail sent. I am also well aware that the local government authority is Labour, I just missed the ‘local’ in my statement. People also know of their corruption and the loss of millions.

This is from Mersey ferries website https://www.merseyferries.co.uk/blog/other/new-ferry-announcement/ Subject to contract, it is expected that the project will see Wirral-based shipbuilders Cammell Laird work with Dutch naval engineering firm Damen on the build of a new Mersey Ferry. Shipbuilders Cammell Laird have a long heritage with Mersey Ferries, having built 15 of the vessels dating back to 1836 as well as well as helping to maintain the current fleet. Headquartered in the Netherlands, Damen are one of the largest naval engineering firms in the world, operating 35 shipyards across five continents. Now is it that the authority have forced cammel to… Read more »

That unite clown doesn’t even know anything about the contract which is really embarrassing if he’s meant to represent the workers.
It was given to cammel laird. They have sub contracted some work but why should unite let facts get in the way of a headline.
What a tool

I read the contract differently. I thought it been awarded to cammellaird and they have sub contracted the hull building part to Holland and are doing the rest at cammel laird.
What ever is going on the press office have and continue to do a terrible job.

From the guardian The contract to build the new ferry will be awarded to Cammell Laird whose Merseyside shipyard has built 15 Mersey ferries going as far back as 1836 and maintains the current fleet. However the company will be working in partnership with Damen shipyard in the Netherlands. According to Rotherham’s office the exact details of how and where work on the new vessel takes place are to be worked through by Cammell Laird and Damen. But the outsourcing of production to the Netherlands has been criticised by Unite, which said the new ferry should be built on Merseyside.… Read more »

I am aware that it was subcontracted to Damen and fitted in CL. But looking at bits of news I have seen over the last few years, I find that CL has been looking for hull manufacturing, I just want to know why they outsourced it. I’m not going to lie, but as someone who lives in the county, I’m disappointed that this decision has been made.

Im sure they outsourced it because they have lots of experience in fitting but have only built one complete hull in their modern existence. Collaborating like this is a way for UK yards to compete and offer a broad range of commercial products. CL is too important a UK resource to be knocking out ferries which are near the lowest end of products. I’m sure the local government would be delighted if CL took on the entire contract on their own but no doubt CL never offered that at least not at a sensible price. A one off ferry would… Read more »

It can be compared to a person not buying a £50k new car from a foreign manufacturer and instead buying a hand built uk made car.
It’s not as good, doesn’t have the comforts of a modern car etc etc.

Turkey got the work as no uk shipyards bid for the work. Ferguson’s can’t bid as they are busy.
