NATO’s command coordinating military aid to Ukraine is expected to pass to a European or Canadian officer in about a year, and will absorb elements of the American-led Security Assistance Group Ukraine, according to NATO.
The plans were set out by Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkewich at a change of command ceremony in Wiesbaden on 3 August, where Lieutenant General Guillaume Beaurpere took over NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine from Lieutenant General Curtis Buzzard, who had commanded since 2024.
NSATU is the command responsible for coordinating the provision of military equipment and training to Ukraine by NATO allies and partner countries.
Grynkewich said the organisation would continue to evolve, with the eventual transfer of command to a European or Canadian officer and the migration of work from the Security Assistance Group Ukraine into NSATU. NATO said the transition would contribute to greater effectiveness and have no impact on support to Ukraine, which remains a top priority.
The alliance framed the change as a demonstration of allies taking on greater responsibility, and linked it explicitly to what it termed NATO 3.0, describing it as a stronger, fairer alliance. Grynkewich said the transition would mean “more effective, efficient and sustainable support, with increased European leadership delivering it”.
NSATU was established following the Washington summit in July 2024 to place coordination of assistance to Ukraine on a formal alliance footing, with its headquarters in Wiesbaden and logistics hubs in eastern member states. It was set up in part to insulate the flow of aid from political changes in individual capitals, taking on functions previously run through the US-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group and associated national arrangements.
The Security Assistance Group Ukraine, also based in Wiesbaden, was created by the United States in 2022 to coordinate training and equipment delivery, and has operated alongside NSATU since the NATO command stood up.
Not sure what NATSU’s specific responsibilities are but at present Zelenski appears to be p**ing in the wind, with his desperate and urgent request for Patriot missiles. Everyone seems to have gone quiet.
Given current geopolitical environment, entirely appropriate and probably preferable for ENATO/Canadian lead for all UKR support functions.
Current estimate of US Patriot production is approximately 600 missiles/yr and has been contracted to increase to 2K+/yr.by 2032 (uncertain re production curve in the interim). Believe both Germany and Japan have been licensed production authority and could embark on an increased production pathway. SAMP/T is certainly a viable alternative choice. Perhaps time for you Brits to become a serious player in this arena? Time for a modernized version of the WWII “Arsenal of Democracy” PR campaign? The unfortunate reality, however, is that it would require some expenditure of coin of the realm. 🤔🤞
