Foreign intelligence services are increasingly using social media journalism and political networks to covertly influence UK public debate and democratic processes, according to Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee.

In its latest Annual Report, covering April 2023 to March 2025, the Committee warns that the threat to the UK now includes “the efforts of foreign states to exert covert and malign influence on UK policy, democracy and public opinion through attempts to influence social media, journalism and political figures”, the committee stated.

The report says hostile states are seeking to manipulate information environments rather than relying solely on traditional espionage. It highlights Russia in particular, stating that in December 2023 the UK government publicly attributed persistent “hack and leak” activity to an FSB-linked cyber unit known as STARBLIZZARD, which attempted to obtain and release material linked to UK political issues.

The Committee notes that state-backed media outlets are also being used as tools of influence. It records that in September 2024 the UK joined the United States in calling out Russian state broadcaster RT as “a mouthpiece of Russian disinformation”, including for efforts aimed at “influencing democratic processes in Moldova”. The report frames this as part of a wider pattern of information warfare directed at Western audiences.

Chinese-linked political interference is also referenced. The Committee recalls that in March 2023 Yang Tengbo was excluded from the UK after authorities judged that “the relationship he developed with Prince Andrew could be used for political interference purposes by the Chinese State”. That decision was upheld on appeal by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission in December 2024.

In a separate case, the report notes that in December 2024 the Investigatory Powers Tribunal dismissed complaints brought by Christine Lee, who had been the subject of an MI5 Interference Alert to Parliamentary Authorities in January 2022 following an investigation that “confirmed her links to the United Front Work Department”.

The Committee warns that social media platforms and digital journalism remain attractive targets because they allow hostile actors to amplify narratives rapidly and obscure attribution. It describes these activities as part of broader attempts to “exert covert and malign influence” rather than isolated incidents.

While acknowledging steps taken to strengthen the UK’s response, including the National Security Act which came into force in December 2023, the Committee cautions that hostile information operations are likely to persist. It says the legislation is intended to “make the UK a harder operating environment”, but the evolving nature of online influence means the threat remains dynamic.

The report concludes that protecting democratic debate now requires sustained attention alongside more traditional counter-espionage work, as foreign states increasingly blur the lines between intelligence activity, media manipulation and political interference.

    • My favourite pro ruzzians are the “pro peace brigade”.

How can you be pro peace but support a country actively carrying out hybrid warfare on all of Europe and having illegally invaded a neighbouring country?

  1. It’s easy to find useful idiots wanting to keep the narrative that Britain is a terrible place with a non functional military, broken economy and rampant crime.

I don’t think these people realise just how far China and Russia are willing to go to push that narrative especially with what seems irrelevant social media posts to us.

Hysteria and Nihilism is the best weapon we can give authoritarian regimes and the British whinging class has both in spades.

    • I think we see it on this site all the time with people pushing the whole ‘they are all the same’ lies.

I think for every ten names used on this site there is one real person speaking for themselves, then nine fake ids run three each by a Russian FSB employee, a Chinese PWO and one of the useful idiots of Reform. They have fake conversations amongst themselves as a cover for running the West down, particularly the EU.

  2. A few days ago, when the Belgian Prime Minister was visiting 10 Downing Street, the press was gathered outside for the photoshoot. One of the reporters, an English sounding female, shouted the following question: “Prime Minister, are you wasting President Trump’s time with another meeting about the war in Ukraine?”

It got me wondering who the hell that reporter was working for? I guess journalists aren’t paid to be loyal to anyone or anything and would let a fire break out just so they could report on a fire.

  3. There is quite a lot of challenge on social media and sites in regards to the concept of Russia being a threat.. infact the individuals tend to echo a general mistrust of government as a way to magnify this.

It’s why political warfare starts with sowing general mistrust and discordant messaging.. before adding in the more direct content.

Look at the U.S… there is plenty of evidence that the present dysfunctional discord was essentially manipulated and manufactured… it’s chinas greatest victory and to be honest means china now has a chance of getting it aims without needing to fight.

Generally any message that includes the complete mistrust of your own government needs to be seriously reviewed for ultra motives… there is a difference between disagreement and holding to account and becoming a dis functional nation.

  4. Well this is a two way street eh? All spook games are. And do not forget that Covid spell of UK Government “nudge units”, Communist Party member Mitchy and other “behavioural psychologists” spinning yarns for Boris.
Also the present shower using nudge tactics via social media, MSM and its version of Pravda the BBC. Not to mention an active military unit currently at work.
Seeing through propaganda is easy, you just have to think for yourself, and then there are the corporate interests who twist information for their own ends.
    Lord Haw Haw on speed.

  5. • The FSB hacked the Democratic National Committee and then released the documents via Wikileaks in order to undermine Hilary Clinton’s election campaign.

    • Most of the conspiracy theories from the pandemic originated from Russia.

    • Reform’s Nathan Gill was a paid Russian asset.

So the question is, is this news really a surprise to anyone?
