A man who intervened to stop a potential terrorist attack outside a Leeds hospital has been awarded the George Medal for bravery.

Nathan Newby, 35, was presented with the award by King Charles III after preventing an attack at St James’ Hospital on 20 January 2023, according to Counter Terrorism Policing.

Newby engaged with Mohammed Farooq, who was armed with knives, an imitation firearm and an improvised explosive device. He persuaded him to move away from the hospital and kept him calm until officers arrived.

Farooq was later convicted of preparing acts of terrorism and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 37 years.

Detective Superintendent Paul Greenwood said: “Nathan Newby G.M.’s intervention that night prevented a potentially devastating attack on the hospital.” He added that Newby’s “remarkable bravery and calmness” had prevented significant loss of life.

  1. Well deserved, balls of steel that man. Although its a pity the islamist survived the encounter.
I’d rather he was worm food than taking up space and taxpayer money in prison
