The Ministry of Defence, in a joint endeavour with the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA), has launched ‘Project Borealis’.

This collaborative project aims to develop the core systems for a civil-military National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC), according to a Prior Information Notice released by the Ministry.

The IT/software capability to be provided under Project Borealis will focus on generating Space Domain Awareness and Space Command and Control. It will merge civilian and military capabilities to enable comprehensive space operations.

The envisaged Borealis system will process and compile information, “across multiple classifications, up to Top Secret (TS),” to monitor the space domain, conduct space operations, and facilitate timely decision making in collaboration with allies and partners.

The system will also integrate with existing and future systems, sensors, and other data sources.

Additionally, the functionality of the current in-service system, AURORA, will be incorporated into Borealis and will need to be developed and supported concurrently with the creation of new systems and functionality.

The tender for Project Borealis is valued between £0-£50M, and while the duration of the contract is not specified, potential suppliers should note that “all budgetary references are indicative at this stage and are subject to Authority spend approvals – subject to change.

Further details, including the deadline for tender submissions and delivery timelines, are yet to be announced.
