Northrop Grumman has entered full-rate production of its Mk44 Stretch Bushmaster Chain Gun for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicle programme, with the weapon set to equip the ACV-30 variant via a Kongsberg remote turret, according to the company.

The Mk44S is intended to enhance the firepower of the Amphibious Combat Vehicle by providing a medium-calibre cannon capable of firing NATO-standard 30x173mm ammunition. Northrop Grumman states that the system offers improved range, reliability and lethality when compared with earlier configurations, and supports the use of the company’s advanced ammunition types.

According to Northrop Grumman, the Mk44S also incorporates a growth path that allows the weapon to be upgraded from 30mm to 40mm through a barrel change and replacement of selected components. The company says this approach is designed to provide flexibility for future requirements without the need to replace the entire weapon system.

Production of the Mk44S for the Marine Corps is taking place at Northrop Grumman’s facility in Mesa, Arizona, where the company states manufacturing is already underway to support the ACV-30 programme.

Commenting on the milestone, Dave Fine, Vice President of Armament Systems at Northrop Grumman, said: “The Mk44 Bushmaster Chain Gun delivers unmatched firepower and reliability in even the most unforgiving conditions. By integrating this proven capability into the Amphibious Combat Vehicle program, we’re equipping Marines with the tools they need to dominate the battlefield and stay ahead of evolving threats.”
