Northrop Grumman has entered full-rate production of its Mk44 Stretch Bushmaster Chain Gun for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicle programme, with the weapon set to equip the ACV-30 variant via a Kongsberg remote turret, according to the company.
The Mk44S is intended to enhance the firepower of the Amphibious Combat Vehicle by providing a medium-calibre cannon capable of firing NATO-standard 30x173mm ammunition. Northrop Grumman states that the system offers improved range, reliability and lethality when compared with earlier configurations, and supports the use of the company’s advanced ammunition types.
According to Northrop Grumman, the Mk44S also incorporates a growth path that allows the weapon to be upgraded from 30mm to 40mm through a barrel change and replacement of selected components. The company says this approach is designed to provide flexibility for future requirements without the need to replace the entire weapon system.
Production of the Mk44S for the Marine Corps is taking place at Northrop Grumman’s facility in Mesa, Arizona, where the company states manufacturing is already underway to support the ACV-30 programme.
Commenting on the milestone, Dave Fine, Vice President of Armament Systems at Northrop Grumman, said: “The Mk44 Bushmaster Chain Gun delivers unmatched firepower and reliability in even the most unforgiving conditions. By integrating this proven capability into the Amphibious Combat Vehicle program, we’re equipping Marines with the tools they need to dominate the battlefield and stay ahead of evolving threats.”

If and it’s a big if, the Defence Investment Plan (DIP) is finally released. Will it mention anything about Boxer get a turreted autocannon? When Warrior was going through its update through the sustainment program before it was cancelled, it was going to be fitted with the CTAS40 in place of the 30mm Rarden. The MOD ordered 515 CTAS40s (complete weapon systems), with 270 going to Ajax, the remaining 245 were earmarked for Warrior. So what has happened to the weapon systems since the Warrior programmed was cancelled? Will they find their way on to Boxer?
Even though Boxer is probably the most heavily protected 8X8 armoured vehicle, where its supposed to be able to withstand 30mm armour piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) across its frontal arc. Having a turreted autocannon still wont turn it in to an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), as it’s unlikely to be capable of keeping up with a Chally cross country. But a heavily armoured personnel carrier (APC) with an the autocannon, will give significant punch to light/medium brigades (I didn’t mention “Strike”).
Davey, I doubt that DIP will announce Boxer with a turreted autocannon. Standard APC modules and RWS (PROTECTOR RS6) that cannot take autocannons were ordered some time ago. Those standard APC modules cannot take the upgraded Ajax turrets either.
However orders can be changed….at a cost!
