The Ministry of Defence has awarded a £41,700 contract to Sifco Applied Surface Concepts (UK) to provide cadmium plating training and associated spares in support of the Royal Air Force’s C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft.

The contract, which began on 27 March 2025 and runs until 31 March 2027, was issued via a negotiated procedure without prior publication, citing the absence of competition for technical reasons.

According to the MOD, Sifco Applied Surface Concepts is the sole provider with the technical capability and proprietary equipment to meet the requirements, as outlined in US Air Force C-17 Technical Orders.

“Sifco Applied Surface Concepts provide the C-17 electroplating equipment, cadmium brush plating solution and procedure listed in the US Air Force (USAF) C-17 Technical Orders,” the MOD stated in procurement documentation.

Accordingly, they are the only economic operator which has the required equipment, technical knowledge, expertise, and experience to undertake and discharge the contractor’s obligations under this contract.”

The contract covers both the provision of specialist training and the supply of cadmium-related spares essential for maintenance activities on the UK’s fleet of eight C-17 aircraft.

Cadmium plating is a critical corrosion prevention process used in aerospace maintenance, particularly on landing gear and structural components subject to harsh environmental exposure.

This renewal follows an earlier arrangement with the same contractor and includes the option for extension by an additional three years. It is not covered by the Government Procurement Agreement due to its low financial value and niche technical scope.

  1. Cadmium isn’t a very nice metal to work with – very, very toxic.

    So I’m intrigued.

Contract price is tiny so I’m also curious why this was put up here.

    • As engineers in the military you are taught the hazards of cadmium plating. As most electrical connectors use it. However, it doesn’t react very well to salt water. Where the oxidation causes a major hazard. A lot of the connectors ised in the maritime environment are gradually being replaced with nickel plated ones.

  2. I wonder how much it would cost to have one of these gold plated?
It’d be completely pointless but amazing to see a huge golden aircraft with a huge flag on it.

    Screw you, Air Force 1.
