A new Survation poll has found that most Scots believe they are more secure as part of the UK, with strong support for retaining the UK’s nuclear deterrent and membership in key international alliances.
The survey, commissioned by Scotland in Union, shows that nearly half (47%) of respondents believe Scotland is safer and has more global influence within the UK, compared to 35% who think the country would be more secure if independent.
At a time of increasing international instability, the poll also reveals that a clear majority (56%) support retaining the UK’s nuclear deterrent, Trident, while just 22% oppose it.
The poll also highlights overwhelming public support for the UK’s membership in key global organisations, with respondents recognising the importance of the country’s role on the world stage.
- 80% said NATO membership is important
- 76% support UK membership of the UN Security Council
- 74% back the UK’s place in the G7
These findings come after SNP leader John Swinney reaffirmed the party’s opposition to nuclear weapons, rejecting a call from former SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford to rethink the stance.
Alastair Cameron, chair of Scotland in Union, said the results highlight public awareness of the UK’s security and diplomatic advantages.
“Current global tensions and uncertainties reinforce how important the UK’s strength and influence is for people in Scotland. As part of the UK, we have a seat at the top table, and international influence which a separate Scotland would lack. This poll shows that most Scots value the benefit of being part of the UK.”
Cameron also said the results should force pro-independence parties to reconsider their stance on nuclear deterrence.
“Scots also support retaining the UK’s nuclear deterrent, something that should give the out-of-touch nationalists of the SNP and the Scottish Greens urgent pause for thought. This is another detailed study which shows Scots understand the advantages of remaining together in the UK.”
“It’s time the SNP listened to the majority of Scots and stopped its damaging campaign to break up the UK.”
Methodology and Verification
The poll, conducted between 6-13 March 2025, surveyed 1,012 Scots aged 16+ via online interviews. Given the politically sensitive nature of the topic, those wishing to verify the data, including survey questions and demographic breakdowns, can do so here and here. The survey followed standard methodological practices, accounting for differential response rates among demographic groups.
The findings reflect a broader trend of public support for strong defence ties and international engagement at a time of global instability.
Most Scot’s are not daft. Only the SNP think that taking a banana to a gun fight is a good idea.
Putin’s mouthpieces threaten us almost daily , having our own deterrent ensures they stay just threats.

If some of the main SNP platform isn’t popular, why do they command a majority at Holyroos? What are the other parties doing so wrong?
For two reasons.
1) there are enough Scot’s daft enough to vote for them while ignoring their abysmal track record in government.
2) Because until recently we had a Tory government in Westminster although I despair at the ineptitude of the current so called “ Labour” government.
Maybe Scotland needs the revival of a Unionist Party untainted by Westminster.
The unionist vote is always split in Scotland, which the SNP capitalise on.
So yes. Agree.
Maybe scotland need a party in government who will work with Westminster for the good of Scotland, take responsibility for their own actions instead of using them to blame all their incompetence on.
