NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is scheduled to meet Denmark’s Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen, and Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Research, Vivian Motzfeldt, at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Monday 19 January 2026.

NATO has confirmed that there will be no media opportunity associated with the meeting.

Denmark and Greenland have both featured prominently in recent diplomatic engagement related to Arctic security. Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, occupies a strategically significant location between North America and Europe and hosts critical infrastructure linked to transatlantic defence. Danish and Greenlandic officials have recently taken part in discussions with United States counterparts on matters relating to defence, research and regional cooperation.

Denmark has indicated that it intends to strengthen its military posture in and around Greenland, including through enhanced cooperation with allies. These steps follow broader NATO discussions on northern defence and reflect the alliance’s focus on maintaining situational awareness and freedom of movement in the region.

Recent months have also seen allied military activity in the High North, including multinational exercises and deployments aimed at improving interoperability and readiness in Arctic conditions. Such activities are routinely described by NATO as defensive in nature and consistent with long-standing alliance commitments.

While no details have been released regarding the agenda or expected outcomes of the 19 January meeting, it follows a series of discussions across NATO concerning the evolving security environment in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.

  1. We should all be concentrating on helping UKR drive Russian forces out but Trump has us all running around dealing with his own madness. What a traitor & Putin asset he is.
Greenland is fully under NATO protection. The USA has been closing down most of its bases there & US companies can bid on mining resources there too.
