Two NATO maritime groups participated in a significant multinational military exercise in the European region this month.

Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1) are involved in Exercise Joint Warrior off the northern coast of Norway, commencing on March 7.

Conducted biannually, Exercise Joint Warrior encompasses airborne exercises, amphibious landings, evacuations, and live-firing.

The Joint Warrior scenario is designed to simulate political tensions in a regional conflict, leading to a buildup of forces from the allied side.

The exercise’s objective is to generate a highly challenging environment for participants to practice tactical procedures and enhance their capabilities both individually and collectively. Interoperability and collaboration are crucial, along with operational-tactical expertise and the capacity to respond suitably and flexibly to various threats.

Over 40 ships and 20 aircraft are participating in the exercise’s initial stage, which is led by Norway and the United Kingdom.

The nations participating include the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Germany, Estonia, France, Poland, and Canada. With the involvement of SNMG1 and SNMCMG1, two of NATO’s four standing naval task forces are prepared to address any threat scenario.
