RAF reserves from the Glasgow-based 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron have established a new space unit.

This pioneering “Flight” is composed initially of three spare-time personnel who will support UK Space Command.

The formation of the new unit was celebrated at a ceremony held at the University of Strathclyde on Wednesday. During the event, the recruits were awarded their UK Space Command patches after successfully completing their space foundation course. The ceremony also marked the ongoing expansion of the unit, with more recruits currently undergoing training to join the ranks.

Air Vice-Marshal Ranald Munro, Commandant General of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, reflected on the historical significance of the moment in a press release:

“This occasion is a reminder that the RAuxAF has been developing in step with the RAF for a hundred years in order to provide operational support to the regular service. A century ago, people could join the Auxiliary Air Force to learn to fly biplanes, today they can join the RAuxAF to assist with the defence of our country’s space interests.”

Air Vice-Marshal Paul Godfrey, Commander of UK Space Command, was present to personally hand out the new UK Space Command patches:

“Reserves have always played a critical role across the armed forces. Their skill sets and specialist knowledge from their civilian lives enhance how we think, and how we operate. I’m honoured and excited to be able to welcome these new space reserves, who will bring new perspectives and ideas to our work.”

The 602 Squadron now joins 607 (County of Durham) Squadron and 7006 Squadron, based at RAF Waddington, as units that offer individuals from civilian life the opportunity to support UK Space Command in their spare time as members of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force.

UK Space Command say that it collaborates with allies and partners globally to ensure that space remains safe, secure, and sustainable for future generations.

Munro gets about. He was the 2* in command of the Army Reserve a few years ago, having been commissioned into 4 Para. I heard second hand that someone asked him how he was getting on with the other Generals in Army HQ, to which he replied “Quite well, some of them are quite bright!”

A Space Command with no Rockets is like an Aircraft Carrier with no planes!
🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not really. SPCOM could end up with a constellation of satellites and still have no rockets.
