Royal Marines have carried out a complex urban warfare exercise alongside Norwegian forces as part of the Joint Expeditionary Force’s (JEF) largest live deployment to date, according to the Royal Navy.
Troops from 40 Commando, supported by Viking armoured vehicles from the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group, conducted a raid to clear a fortified enemy position in a simulated built-up area. The scenario saw RAF Typhoon aircraft identify targets before the assault force moved in using Fighting in Built-Up Areas (FIBUA) tactics to neutralise the threat. The training, held on 7 October, formed part of Exercise Tarasiss.
According to official descriptions, Tarasiss represents a “step change” in Northern European defence cooperation. Running from early September until the end of October, it involves thousands of personnel across the North Atlantic, Scandinavia and the Baltic region, with air, land and maritime operations conducted by the UK and its JEF partners. The exercise aims to demonstrate how the multinational force can respond rapidly to regional security challenges and operate seamlessly alongside NATO.
Established following the 2014 Wales Summit, the JEF brings together ten northern European nations under UK leadership. Exercise Tarasiss marks its most ambitious deployment since inception, incorporating coordinated activity across land, sea, air, space and cyber domains. While the JEF operates independently of NATO command structures, it is designed to complement the Alliance’s deterrence and reassurance posture.
Canadian forces have joined this year’s iteration, underlining the growing network of partners involved in regional security in the High North and Baltic Sea region.
The exercise follows a series of integrated operations under the JEF banner over the past year, reflecting the increasing strategic weight of northern Europe in NATO’s collective defence planning.
Thanks to successive government decisions our fantastic amphibious Royal Marines can hardly “strike from the sea” anymore after the disposal of Ocean, Albion, Bulwark, Largs Bay and soon Argus. I was in Falmouth today and two of our three remaining Bay class are laid up alongside! How did we manage to get in this state?
