Saab has introduced the Compact Radar Module for the Giraffe 1X radar, which will be showcased at the Eurosatory 2024 defence trade fair, according to a press release.

This new module aims to offer an all-in-one solution, enhancing the versatility and mobility of the well-established Giraffe 1X radar system.

The Compact Radar Module is designed to meet fast operational requirements with its innovative folding antenna, which retracts into the lightweight radar module at the press of a button.

This feature ensures a highly mobile capability suited for urgent operations requiring a compact and efficient radar system, says the company.

“Giraffe 1X Compact Radar Module is an all-in-one solution, made with mobility and operational urgency as key user needs. The Compact Radar Module is the latest example of how we are leveraging the capabilities of the Giraffe 1X radar, giving customers a number of different ways to deploy Giraffe 1X wherever and however it can maximise their operational effectiveness,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.

The Giraffe 1X radar is known for its lightweight, battle-proven performance, and continuous software upgrades, ensuring it remains effective against emerging threats.

With a large search volume of 75 km, the radar system is suitable for operations with limited infrastructure, providing commanders with quality air defence target data, drone detection for counter-UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems), and sense and warn capabilities for rockets, artillery, and mortars.

  1. Does it come with the Giraffe? Seriously though, that’s a nice unit, very compact and good range. I am curious what the power requirements are.

    • You mean an inflatable one…? Possibly. 😆 It’s pretty short necked for a 🦒too. Needs an extendable thingy. 😆

        • Evening SB, Or maybe “Llama”!… 😆.
How’s all your exams going, are you finished yet? The big world awaits…

          • Last one today!
Then all done, an afternoon with friends etc.
I like Llama, but it isn’t really tall enough for that, either.
            Maybe “Goat”?

          • I’m not sure if “goats” have good eyesight… or “Llamas” for that matter… Lol 😁 and are “Giraffes” long or short sighted?… 🤣
And good luck with post-exams… hope you find something you like.

  2. Interesting so you can press the button, drive off and it looks like a civilian utility vehicle.

I’d guess that there is a diesel generator in there or is it off the alternator and battery pack?

  3. This on top of the new 40mm?
    As an independent AD unit?
Or even as a new lightweight CAMM vehicle (Pantsir equivalent) on Boxer.
There’s no end to what could be done, or at least dreamed about, with a powerful radar that small…

    • I think the CAMM Sky Sabre system already has a Giraffe type radar? But, yes, this is way more compact. I’d like to see the Martlet/ LMM/Starstreak get a bit of “ER” treatment.

      • Yes, but the radar is so big it needs multiple vehicles to actually form a fire group and it takes half an hour to actually set up and start working.
I was thinking along the likes of the Tor Russian system. You could have this radar on top, let’s say 6 erectable CAMM and an operator desk or two and it would still fit inside a Boxer module without top much difficulty.
Then all you have to do is stop the vehicle and swing the launchers up to start working, with an exceptionally long range radar for a system in that category.
I remember us trying to convince everyone of the utility of LMM-ER. Wasn’t the plan to fit a StarStreak booster to the back of a radio command guided LMM as a Pantsir style system? Even that could use this radar as a long range MM system, though the range at which enough targeting data is produced would be a lot smaller.

        • Yes, a bit of a Compact-CAMM all-in-one launcher unit. I think you need to submit a proposal to the manufacturer…

          • I’ll do it if it means I get to work for them later.
Honestly I can’t decide between them, BAE Tempest and Qinetiq as a dream job.

  4. Not sure I would want to be sat in the cab if that radar operates at that height, all toasty and warm..mmmm
