The UK government has declined to comment on operational matters following the US Defence Secretary’s decision to suspend offensive cyber operations against Russia, according to a written parliamentary response from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

In a question submitted on 3rd March 2025, James Cartlidge, Conservative MP for South Suffolk, asked the Defence Secretary to assess the implications of the US decision on UK policy.

Responding on 6th March 2025, Luke Pollard, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the MoD, spoke on the UK’s close security partnership with the United States but refrained from discussing operational specifics. He stated:

“The Ministry of Defence maintains a close security partnership with US counterparts. While the UK’s offensive cyber capabilities remain essential to both its and partner nations’ national security, I hope the hon. Gentleman will recall from his time as a Minister in the Department that we do not comment on operational matters.”

The refusal to comment follows the US decision to halt offensive cyber operations and planning against Russia. While the UK has previously emphasised the importance of cyber capabilities in national security, it remains unclear whether the US policy shift will influence Britain’s own approach to cyber warfare and electronic operations.

With the MoD maintaining its stance on secrecy regarding cyber operations, the extent of any potential policy changes will likely remain undisclosed.

    • There was an interesting question in one of the US oversight committee. Basically asked if a trump government member could add anything that a Russian asset would do that the trump adminstration hasn’t and they couldn’t answer the question. I’m sure his not but equally I suspect his got financial interests in Russia he wants released.

  1. Before anyone starts throwing accusations like “traitorous”, they might actually do their homework and determine that a news report by an anonymous source was countered by the US Secretary of Defense who flatly stated that:
“TO BE CLEAR: @SecDef has neither canceled nor delayed any cyber operations directed against malicious Russian targets and there has been no stand-down order whatsoever from that priority,” reads a statement posted to X.

    • not what has been reported widely.
while it is true defensive cyber operations are continuing, all offensive cyber operations were stopped

    • Right now it’s impossible to know what is going on, the trump adminstration isn’t just u turning they are spinning on every topic. It’s like they are tossing a coin each time they get asked a question on a position on anything.
