Prominent trauma surgeons from Defence Medical Services and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine have collaborated to impart their expertise to medical staff in Ukraine.

Lieutenant Colonel James Baden, renowned for his specialisation in reconstructive surgery post-combat injuries, spearheaded the UK team that offered training to six Ukrainian medical experts.

The instructional sessions took place in Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital and Royal Victoria Infirmary. Here, the participants had the opportunity to observe live surgical procedures conducted in an NHS theatre setting.

There are plans for additional training sessions at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM), located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. This facility is known for treating injured military personnel who are brought back from overseas.

Major General Tim Hodgetts CB CBE, the UK Surgeon General and also the Chair of the Committee of Surgeon Generals in NATO, was quoted as saying:

“Sharing medical skills and expertise amongst allies is the right thing to do. Both military and civilians injured in Ukraine have similar injury patterns, so sharing the expertise to enhance all patient outcomes equally is also right in this circumstance. Military and Civil collaboration is at the very heart of NATO’s new Medical Support Capstone Concept.

I am hugely impressed by the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Medical Services, their valour, and their dedication to saving lives in the most challenging of circumstances.

In an increasingly abstract world dominated by digital and technology innovation, we still need surgeons with exquisite practical skills to treat the complex and disfiguring wounds of physical combat.”

One of the skills we are still world class in, militarily, is trauma hospitals. The experience from Afghan might be fading in real world terms, but between SF, and the institutional knowledge gained from Herrick we are still world beaters in that field.

Yes the signs saying “Field Hospital” have been succesfully taken down, and the new ones saying “Multi-Role Medical Regiment” have been successfully acquired and installed in-front of RHQ. 😂

I’ve not found the internal ORBATS to my satisfaction, are they RHQ, Support Sqn and Clinical Sqn or is my info wrong?

For example, for 22 MRMR I have a ? Support Sqn, 33( B ) Sqn and 12 ( C ) Clinical Sqn.

I don’t know, I mean, I’m sure I could ask around and find out, but apparently first hand information just gets you trolls spamming all your replies these days. :/

Even if the thought of two founders of the USSR blowing hell out of each other warms my heart. This medical training should be the extent of our military aid to Ukraine.
