Grenade attack on Venezuelan Court

A stolen police helicopter has launched an attack on the Venezuelan Supreme Court and failed in an attack that has been condemned as terrorism.

According to witnesses of the attack, the helicopter hovered over the Supreme Court in the nations capital of Caracas with an attacker throwing grenades down. Whilst some of the grenades didn’t explode and shots were also fired from the helicopter, witnesses reported hearing several explosions and the helicopter was also reported to have hovered over the Interior Ministry building.

President Maduro said in a televised speech to the nation that it was an attack of terrorism, condemning the attack whilst reassuring the nation that the air defences protecting the buildings were successful in thwarting the attack.

It has been reported that several dozen are dead and injured in the attack and the President has demanded that the opposition coalition condemn the attack.

Whilst the Communication Minister, Ernesto Villegas, has gone on the attack and said that the attack was a coup plot which involved grenades of Colombian origin fired from a stolen aircraft, some opposition forces have stated their belief that the attack was staged by the government to justify the repression of its citizens or even potentially cover up the drama that is occurring at the National Assembly where lawmakers said they were besieged by pro-government gangs.

Since President Maduro took office, Venezuela has gone from being an oil rich state and is becoming a failed state under his premiership. Opposition protestors, often described as terrorists by the government, and security forces have been clashing for months now with the death toll reaching at least 75 and unrest only expected to escalate as the crisis continues.
