BAE Systems ship repair business in Norfolk in the US has won a $151.3M contract to provide maintenance, modernisation and repair services for the USS Gettysburg.
The US Defense Department said Monday the company will also offer facilities and personnel who will conduct the ship maintenance work under the firm-fixed-price procurement contract.
BAE will perform the work through March 2020.
The US Navy will obligate $146.3M from fiscal 2018 operations and maintenance and other procurement funding.
The USS Gettysburg is a Ticonderoga class guided-missile cruiser in the United States Navy. She is named for the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. She was laid down at the Bath Iron Works in Maine.
Her guided missiles and five-inch mounted guns render her capable of facing and defeating threats in air, on and in the sea, and ashore as well. She can carry up to two Seahawk LAMPS multi-purpose helicopters.
Gettysburg recently participated in NATO naval exercise Exercise Saxon Warrior off the coast of England, under the operational control of Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST). During this exercise, Gettysburg operated with destroyer HMS Dauntless..
Not sure which look more dated – CG47s or T23s… Fine capable ships – just “dated”…
Cheers!
Rather UGLY looking ships? Look like shipping containers up front and then are a complete mess in amidships. Then, more shipping containers further aft!!
These ships need to be put-down!!

these Ships kick ass, They are not built to be pretty, they are built to kick ass! Ugly ship SMH Nations would love to have this as an escort.
Okay but it’s still ugly.
Put two or three of them around one of our super carriers, and you have real power. What do your type 45’s provide except breakdowns and good looks
If the US wants to quickly increase the size of the USN these ships will need to stay in service for another 10 plus years.
They may be ugly but still the baddest ships on the planet. It’s like the US navy just said we don’t give a f what it looks like just fit it with as many missile silos as possible, radar that has 360 degree visibility, oh and it’s got to have two 5 inch guns and a hanger for 2. Oh one more thing we need them in the water tomorrow.
I would personally love it if the Royal Navy had a small number of cruisers. Maybe something based on an enlarged type 45 hull, minus power and propulsion issues. The Ticos are really superb surface combatants. Still unsurpassed 30 years after their introduction into service. That shows how successful a design they are. Ugly as sin yes, capable warships- most definetly.
A good thought, but the uk has no need for a cruiser really they are too man power intensive to run and far too much money to run with regards to what they bring to the fight. they are meant to operate as flagships also, a role which the Queen Elizabeth class fills, there wouldn’t be much point in having two flagships in one battle group, the US uses them due to having multiple fleets we barely have 1 fleet, I don’t include the minehunter fleet in that assessment either due to it not being a combat fleet its a passive defence fleet. but 6 destroyers and 13 frigates of which at any one time 2/3rds are in port hardly makes for a fleet and that’s because of manning issues, to introduce a cruiser into that with a compliment somewhere between a destroyer and QE na
The Ticonderoga class are heavy on man power because they are so old.
I think the multi mission bay to the rear of the T26 frigate could be converted into a large 64 cell VLS for land attack missiles, effectively converting them into cruisers. However the treasury would deem 16 cells for land attack and 8 cells for anti ship as more than adequate for the RN so it will never happen.
Agreed it will never happen but my nomination would be for 4 ROK KDX-lll Sejong The Great class Destroyers.
They are going to be around for a while no doubt. The USN cannot reach any kind of expansion without them.
