The North Atlantic Council has issued a strong statement in response to recent malicious cyber activities targeting Germany and Czechia, expressing solidarity with the nations and condemning the cyberattacks attributed to the Russian-backed threat actor APT28.
The statement follows incidents involving a cyber campaign against the Social Democratic Party of Germany and various institutions in Czechia.
NATO officials have identified APT28, a group allegedly sponsored by the Russian Federation’s GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate), as the perpetrator behind these attacks.
This group is also reported to have targeted governmental entities, critical infrastructure operators, and other organisations across NATO member states, including Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Sweden.
“We strongly condemn malicious cyber activities intended to undermine our democratic institutions, national security, and free society,” a NATO statement outlined.
Furthermore, NATO has reiterated its resolve to use all necessary capabilities to deter, defend against, and counteract cyber threats. This includes considering coordinated responses among member states to enhance collective cyber defence efforts.
The Council’s statement also calls on all nations, including Russia, to adhere to their international obligations and commitments to responsible state behaviour in cyberspace, as affirmed by the United Nations.
there is not much point in asking Russia to adhere to any agreement!
I’m sure Putin will be shocked by such underhand activities.
Site comment section looks different.
There is now a @guest and number displayed next to each posters ID.
Anyone else seeing this?
Yeah it’s been there a few days. Probably a mechanism to link each message back to a specific user which should make it more difficult for certain people to spoof the regular members of the forum. At least George will be able to see who is doing it.
Ahhh, OK. Good one.
I’m getting it too, it’s probably a way of stopping people masquerading as others by giving unique identifiers. A good idea, but a bit clunky, would be nice if there was at least a bit of personalisation.
The real change is that there is now a search bar for the comments section, which will save hours and hours of poring over hundreds of comments for that one useful bit of information from DaveyB, Dern or the like.
Like the one if you click on a posters grav and their written and post contributions are shown? That has been there for years.
Ahh, ok, my error. I see it now!!
Well the site was down for a good few hours the other day so maybe the 2 are related.
That must be why I had issues getting into the site for a while yesterday. Thanks.
Just wonder if Mr Putin and his cohorts going are going to try to “rain on Macron’s Olympic parade” at all after his “troops on the ground in Ukraine” suggestiion? Big opportunity for some further mischief here.
I’m sure they’ll be lots of underhand stuff going on, cyber will be a big thing I should think. I imagine the whole thing would be a security nightmare. They’ll need a lot of boots on the ground I should think.
Yes, weird isn’t it. I suppose it may allow people to spot new posters posing as more established ones here. Only guessing. Who’s bothering to record everybodys serial number?!
Or maybe it’s the CCP/Putins way of showing us we’re all marked for targetting….
I can think of 2 people who might! One, a serial Troll catcher/baiter.
The other, likes to ID supposed or actual double accounts.
