The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has announced its intention to award a contract worth up to £18 million to Forum Energy Technology (UK) Ltd (FET) for the provision of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), spares, and in-service support, according to a transparency notice.

This contract will span 31 months, running from 2 September 2024 to 31 March 2027.

The Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO) division of the MOD has chosen to award this contract directly to FET without prior publication of a contract notice in the UK e-notification service, citing national security reasons under Regulation 7(1)(a) of the Defence and Security Public Contract Regulation (DSPCR) 2011, according to the transparency notice.

The notice states, “SALMO have determined that currently only FET can supply the ROV that fully meets all the Key User Requirements (KUR’s) which are: Depth rating and ability to upgrade to threshold; Payload Capacity; Operating System and INS – ability to dynamically position; UK Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).”

Further details of the contract specify that delivery is expected to commence on 2 September 2024, with completion by 31 March 2027.

The procurement process underscores the MOD’s commitment to enhancing its underwater capabilities through advanced technological solutions provided by UK-based manufacturers.

        • In theory the team should be greater than the sum of the parts. Apparantly that is not the case – yet. Surely we can only get better. 😀

    • Forget Kick Ball and how to roll around on the grass in the last dying throws ! , I want to know about these “other beings” ? I know Trump is one and Dianne Abbott, Katie Price for sure, The Kardashian sisters in Murca but are there any Klingons ? or are you talking “Tall White’s” and “Lizard People” ? Have you been to Roswell ?👽👽👽🚀

  1. MOD Procurement should do more of this. When there is only one realistic supplier explain why and allocate the contract. This has always been legal. Too many people covering their backsides and not acting in the interests of the Country.

    • KUR includes the ability to operate and recover at 6000m, that explains the price and only 1 system 😉 Very nice Toy indeed.

    • 😂😂😂 Yes, lol, that’s a very fair question !
Personally I think it looks like one of those robot lawn mowers, maybe it’s for mowing seagrass so that we can spot those pesky Orcs hiding in their Yasen’s off the west coast of ROI.👀

      • I don’t think so the KURs are way above those required for UK waters, they include operating at a maximum operating depth of 6000m and includes recovery.
That is a very high end capability so I agree with GB hints it’s only 1 so it’s for SALMO and very deep underwater salvage and recovery. 🤔
For MROSS you’d use more numerous systems for monitoring the U.K. assets, similar to mine hunting RUV’s.

        • Hi mate. Thanks for that.
I took the SALMO article ref as just being the purchasing authority. So their MSTs will also use these, cool!
Their ROV team is at Devonport, saw a job advert for them recently.

        • Just a thought, what about monitoring the cables further out into the Atlantic with greater depths?
How deep was the F35B we lost? I assume SALMO were involved in that as recovering sensitive tech is another of their roles.
