Nineteen housing providers across the UK will receive £4.5 million to build new homes and refurbish existing accommodation for veterans and their families.
The funding, announced by Minister for Veterans and People Louise Sandher-Jones MP at the Stoll Foundation’s Kings Road Park development in Fulham, will deliver 45 new homes and fund upgrades to shared facilities and critical infrastructure.
At the ceremony, Sandher-Jones officially opened Valour House, a new facility offering long-term accommodation for veterans and their families. The minister said the initiative represents tangible progress toward the Prime Minister’s pledge to expand secure housing for former service personnel.
“Every veteran deserves a safe, secure place to call home. That’s not just a moral obligation – it’s a promise this Government is determined to keep,” Sandher-Jones said in the press release. “Today marks another significant step towards delivering the Prime Minister’s pledge to provide homes fit for our heroes across the United Kingdom.”
She added that “we’re delivering real change through the Veterans Capital Housing Fund,” highlighting the direct impact of the scheme in providing stability and support for veterans and their families.
The Veterans Capital Housing Fund provides grants to organisations supporting veterans in every region of the UK. Nine organisations, including those in Wales, London and the South-East, will share £3.9 million in major grants, while ten others will receive top-up funding totalling over £500,000. The Ministry of Defence said the money will support both new construction and key refurbishments, including roof, boiler and window replacements, and accessibility improvements.
To date, the fund has distributed more than £12.5 million, supporting thousands of veterans. The announcement precedes publication of the Defence Housing Strategy, which will include measures to improve homeownership opportunities through a “first-dibs” priority scheme for service personnel and veterans to buy new homes built on surplus MoD land.
Will Campbell-Wroe, Chief Executive of the Stoll Foundation, said in the press release that “the Stoll Foundation was delighted to have the minister officially open Valour House which will provide accommodation for veterans and their families for years to come.” He added that as “the only specialist veteran housing provider registered with the Regulator of Social Housing, we are proud to provide these high-quality homes at social rent in conjunction with the Greater London Authority and the Berkeley Group.”
According to the Ministry of Defence, Operation FORTITUDE has received over 4,100 referrals and helped more than 1,000 veterans into housing since its launch.
