Thirty-nine Royal Navy submarine qualifying students have completed the classroom-based dry phase of their training at HMNB Clyde, the service stated.

The pass out ceremony took place at the Royal Navy Submarine Training Centre (RNSTC) and included 15 students from the Astute-class course and 24 from the Vanguard-class course. It was the first time this year the centre hosted a double class pass out.

Certificates were presented by Commodore Ben Haskins, Deputy Rear Admiral Submarines and Commander Submarine Flotilla, who praised the students joining the Submarine Service. “It is an enormous privilege to welcome 39 SMQs to the Submarine Flotilla,” Haskins said.

“Submariners are a remarkable cadre, facing the challenges of life underwater to carry out an essential duty for their country. Royal Navy submarines are outstanding and crewed by brilliant people.”

During the event, Haskins highlighted the significance of the students joining the Submarine Service as it marks its 125th anniversary this year. The Royal Navy said the award for best student was given to Engineering Technician Weapon Engineering Submariner (Strategic Weapons System), ET WESM(SWS) Wilkes, in recognition of his work ethic and leadership. In keeping with naval tradition, he was presented with a dolphin flask.

The ceremony also included recognition of Warrant Officer 2 McVey, who received his Long Service and Good Conduct Third Clasp. The Royal Navy said McVey joined in 1980 and has completed more than 30 Continuous At Sea Deterrent patrols during a 45-year career, and has been awarded a Gold Bomber pin by HRH Prince William. The RNSTC forms part of a longer-term project to transform HMNB Clyde into a Single Integrated Operating Base for the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service. The service said the new “Dolphin Building” will support training for current Vanguard-class submarines and future Dreadnought-class deterrent boats.

  1. Pass Out Ceremony and Certificates?!! My word how times have changed – all I got was a handshake and then went to the ‘burgh for a few pints and a Chinese! 😂(congratulations lads and ladies 👏🏻) 🏴‍☠️

  2. I completed my dry SMQ at Devonport in 2002 and my wet aboard Turbs heading into Gib after the TLAM firings. What a welcome to the silent service that period was.
