The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s took part in a joint operation with US forces targeting a Houthi military facility in Yemen on 29 April 2025.
The strike was aimed at a drone manufacturing site linked to the ongoing Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
According to the official statement, “UK forces participated in a joint operation with US forces against a Houthi military target in Yemen. This action was in line with long-standing policy of the UK government, following the Houthis initiating their campaign of attacks in November 2023, threatening freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, striking international ships, and killing innocent merchant mariners.”
Careful planning and intelligence analysis preceded the operation, with the MoD stating that “a cluster of buildings, used by the Houthis to manufacture drones of the type used to attack ships… located some fifteen miles south of Sanaa,” was selected for targeting. The strike took place after dark, with RAF Typhoons employing Paveway IV precision-guided bombs and receiving in-flight refuelling from Voyager tankers.
The operation was carefully timed and executed to minimise civilian harm. The MoD noted: “Very careful planning had been completed to allow the targets to be prosecuted with minimal risk to civilians or non-military infrastructure. As a further precaution, the strike was conducted after dark… All of our aircraft subsequently returned safely.”
The UK’s actions form part of a wider international response to repeated Houthi attacks that have disrupted global trade and endangered maritime safety in the region.
Surely we should have had a carrier in the RedSea for them to land and refuel on before going back to HMS Akrotiri!?
