As part of the Surface Manoeuvre future capabilities initiative, investigations are being conducted by the Commando Force to identify replacement solutions for in-service craft to meet the demands of the Littoral Strike Concept of Employment.

These new requirements are distinct from the previous operating concept for which in-service capabilities have been developed, says the tender notice.

What does the tender notice list as requirements?

The overall procurement is described as the supply of eight Harbour Hoist Dock Systems and the installation of those eight Harbour Hoist Dock Systems

The specifics are:

  • Lifting capacity of at least 8000 kgs for each dock
  • Expected life span of at least 20 years
  • Ability to perform in all climatic conditions expected in the UK, including resistance to snow and ice, and temperatures ranging from -15 to +40 degrees for air and -5 to +20 degrees for water.

Each dock must be able to accommodate a craft with specific size and height requirements, which are as follows:

  • Length overall 9.10 metres
  • Beam over fender 2.90 metres
  • Beam inside gunwales (max) 2.35 metres
  • Height – keel to mast masthead light 2.79 metres
  • Height – keel to top of radio box 1.85 metres
  • Draught – light condition 0.60 metres
  • Draught – Fully laden 0.70 metres

The projected delivery date for the necessary components is March 31, 2023.

Hi Geoff. The ORCs or the items in the article?

An “ORC” is what you see in the main photo. “Offshore Raiding Craft”

They supplemented or replaced the myriad RIB/RRC/IRC types used by the RM.

Used by 43 Cdo, 539 Sqn RM, which is a part of 47 Cdo ( that was previously 1 AGRM. ) Also used by a few other minor units I believe, though unsure if the “RM unit” allocated to Poole uses them?

ORC’s I’m OK with. It’s the floating dock.😙

OK. I’m none the wiser myself really… I googled “Harbour Hoist Dock Systems” to get an idea and I’m sure I’m at the same level as you regards them. They seem tailor made for ORCs.

ORCs, a somewhat unfortunate choice of acronym, given current geo-political events. Wouldn’t want someone to contact RAF and request an airstrike. 🤔😳😉😁

Hi Tommo.

Or look at Street view. Which on Lake Drive was then removed.

There are some nice aerials on GE of both the VSVs in the Car Park when they were retired and the FICs that replaced them.

On the “RM unit” I was not referring to the SBS, as they I believe are not entirely RM these days anyway, but the particular RM unit that supports their amphibious operations and operates the varied craft you can see at the Lake Drive site.

New pontoon hoists to be delivered in about 2.5 months…the marines may have to raid a marina somewhere to get them on that timescale 🤣

Just posted this with one link to the actual article now awaiting for approval!

“The Hungarian Ministry of Defence (MoD) ordered 209 Lynx armoured vehicles, nine Büffel 3 armoured recovery vehicles, nine armoured vehicle-launched bridges (AVLBs), and 16 trucks, plus ammunition, simulators, training, an initial supply of spare parts, and maintenance support worth more than EUR2 billion (USD1.85 billion) in September 2020.”

I was mentioning people associated with “them” at P so that might have upset someone? Even though I did not actually name them, and their alleged unit name is out there if one bothers to look for it…..so the issue is what exactly??

Part of the ‘Sea Base’ concept. These can be used to lift ORCs (or their uprated CRC comrades) out of water for maintenance at remote island bases, or tied up alongside a LPD etc.
