The government has said it is confident that UK submarine facilities will continue to attract skilled personnel despite concerns about the potential impact of new AUKUS facilities in Australia drawing workers away from Barrow-in-Furness and Plymouth.
Minister of State for Defence Luke Pollard provided the response to a written question from Ben Obese-Jecty, the Conservative MP for Huntingdon, tabled on 27 May. Obese-Jecty asked what assessment had been made of the potential impact of new SSN-AUKUS facilities in Australia on workforce retention at both sites.
Pollard acknowledged that some movement of personnel is inevitable but framed it positively, saying it “reflects the benefits of global mobility” and that AUKUS partners “respect the joint nature of this programme and the fact that through it we will develop more resilient skills bases in each country.”
On the broader workforce picture, Pollard said AUKUS Pillar 1 “cannot be realised without the essential personnel and expertise needed to design, build, operate, maintain and decommission SSNs, but it also offers an unprecedented opportunity to integrate and grow the submarine building workforce of all three partners.”
He said the programme “will create thousands of jobs in all three countries” and expressed confidence that “the UK’s world-leading facilities will continue to attract the very best personnel, with the Team Barrow and Team Plymouth initiatives further enhancing this.”

If I was a young person with the will to work and the capabilies required I would go to Australia. This clueless government is going to bankrupt us.
Mind you Australians endlessly whinge about their Govt so I doubt Brits will suddenly change their natural tendencies there.
Morning. I spotted Rons post first. Have a look..😊
You need to have clearances to work in the yards. Australia can’t verify the identity of foreign born personnel because it doesn’t have access to UK records and oddly enough HMG isn’t going to make easy for Australia to poach skilled workers.
It didn’t stop my great nephew who has been in Australia of just over a year ans is doing very well . As for the government, if they can’t stop people getting in they certainly can’t stop them leaving.
That would be a neat trick because they haven’t built ship sheds for the boats yet. The requirements for access to submarines technology is much more stringent. The French and Germans aren’t allowed access to AUKUS technology. Its part of the reason why the French went ballistic when Australia cancelled the SSKs
I’m sorry but you’ve lost me. In my original post and subsequently I didn’t mention jobs in defence, although my nephew does work for a contractor on site in naval and air force stations. I said if I had the opportunity to go these days I would.
Is your nephew involved in the manufacture of classified weapons?
No
Depends Geoff, if I was a young professional involved in anything from finance to software development I wouldn’t go any where near Australia. If I was a truck driver willing to work 28 days on in a mine in the middle of the desert I would. Manual jobs pay really well in Australia, Professional service jobs much better in the UK.
Few outsiders understand just how expensive Australia is and just how high its taxes are compared to the UK.
Australia is one of the world most successful countries with a massive GDP per capita largely based on a recent resource boom. Qatar has an even more impressive GDP per capita it doesn’t mean it’s a nice place to live.
If you look at the HDI index which is a much better indicator of quality of life Australia is incredibly high at number 7 in the world and the UK is incredibly high at number 12 in the world.
In both examples largely based on having a series of Labour Government that introduced a welfare state at the right time and a series of Convervative governments that maintained a business friendly environment.
That’s why millions of people from all over the world try to move to both countries every year.
It’s Perhaps the Facilities both Industrial and External to the Work Environment that ultimately Would Sway People
.The Facilities Both inside BAE Barrow and in the Town Itself will Probably Not Match Australia’s…!
Britain’s Welfare System Certainly Attracts a large Number of The Illegal Immigrants..!.Although How Sustainable this System is is Open to Question..?..
WE Can’t keep Taxing And Borrowing Indefinitely,.!. No Matter how well Meaning it is…..!
A ggod past maybe, but now we have a government that is creating havoc in the private sector whilst plowing money into a public secotr we can’t afford with taxes on people who can’t afford to pay them.
