The Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract worth nearly £2.6 million to Bridgwater & Taunton College for the provision of nuclear degree apprentice training, according to a contract award notice published on 15 April 2025.

The contract supports the enrolment of up to 30 students per year, over three annual cohorts, into the ST0289 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer integrated degree programme—an apprenticeship standard recognised by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).

The training provision includes both academic instruction and occupational skills training (OST), with the latter integrated into the course content as a higher education component. According to the notice, “Apprentice costs will be covered by the Government Apprentice Levy, and the Authority will only make payment against the Occupational Skills Training.”

The programme also includes the implementation of an End-Point Assessment Plan (EPA) as part of its structure.

The work is commissioned by the MoD’s Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), which oversees the UK’s submarine-based nuclear deterrent programme. Though based in Bristol, the training will be delivered by Bridgwater & Taunton College in Somerset, a key provider of nuclear education and technical skills.

The contract falls under CPV code 80000000 – education and training services – and underscores the continued demand for skilled nuclear engineers to support the UK’s defence nuclear enterprise.

No specific contract duration was listed, but the multi-cohort approach suggests delivery will extend over several years.

  1. This item must have only just come on line -There’s no bloody posts telling me how much I could earn yet!!! It’s like virgin snow that you have to walk into – so here I am nowt to say …but just to say “I was First”…that felt goooooood

  2. I don’t know how this college will provide this training with no prior experience in nuclear training…. They would be better off investing in some of the large elite universities where these kind of skills are located.

  3. Happy Easter to most of you 🥳 as for the spammers kindly follow the Easter 🐰 hop down a hole and stay there 🤬

  4. As for the serious stuff about this article, some may think it odd that an area nowhere near Barrow, Derby, Rosyth or Plymouth is offering this course. Simple fact is that we need to regenerate and expand the DNE after the virtual implosion of the 90’s and 00’s and the courses are chocker full with apprentices.
I’d wish them all the best and good luck with your studies, the way things are expanding you should all have a long, safe, prosperous and rewarding career.

  5. To be frank we need this at at least 4 other colleges for the same value and numbers…nuclear industry will pick the trainees off very quickly…
