The United States is redeploying the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East, in a move that will place two US carrier strike groups in the region amid renewed tensions with Iran.

The Ford’s movement will reinforce an already significant US naval presence, with the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln currently operating in the region alongside three guided missile destroyers. According to reporting, the decision will place “two aircraft carriers and their accompanying warships in the region”, adding further US military weight at a time when regional governments have warned of the risks of escalation.

One source described the move as part of Trump’s broader effort to increase pressure on Iran, stating that the deployment “puts more American firepower behind President Donald Trump’s efforts to coerce Iran into a deal over its nuclear program.”

The Ford has been on deployment since June 2025, but its operational tasking has shifted repeatedly. It was previously moved from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean as part of a major US military build-up linked to an operation involving Venezuela. Reports indicate that the carrier had been positioned in the Caribbean last autumn during what was described as the largest US military build-up in the region in three decades, connected to an operation targeting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The Ford is the lead ship of the Gerald R. Ford-class, displacing around 100,000 tons and carrying more than 75 aircraft. Commissioned in 2017, it is homeported at Norfolk, Virginia, and represents one of the most capable carrier platforms in the US Navy. The deployment comes amid a volatile strategic environment in the Middle East, with Gulf states warning that any strike could trigger wider regional instability.

The redeployment also follows reports that talks with Iranian intermediaries did not materialise this week, despite suggestions from Trump only days earlier that negotiations could resume.

With two carriers now expected to be operating in or near the Arabian Sea, the United States will be positioned to conduct sustained air operations, maritime security missions, and deterrence patrols across the region if required.
