The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has selected Northrop Grumman’s AN/ALQ-251 radio frequency countermeasures system to upgrade its fleet of C-130J Hercules aircraft, enhancing protection against modern electronic threats.
Announced on 3 April 2025, the deal will see the Australian fleet benefit from a system currently in use by the U.S. Department of Defense, improving interoperability and reducing lifecycle costs through commonality with an existing American programme of record.
According to Northrop Grumman, the AN/ALQ-251 system provides a suite of capabilities including radar warning, threat identification, geolocation and countermeasures. The system is designed to operate effectively in dense and contested electromagnetic spectrum environments, providing aircrews with improved situational awareness and threat defence.
“With the increase of advanced radio frequency threats, our digital AN/ALQ-251 system allows the RAAF’s C-130J fleet the freedom of manoeuvre to carry out its wide range of humanitarian and national security missions safely,” said James Conroy, vice president for navigation, targeting and survivability at Northrop Grumman.
The C-130J Hercules is a core platform within the RAAF’s air mobility fleet, used for tactical transport, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and regional engagement missions. Enhancing its survivability through electronic warfare upgrades comes amid rising global emphasis on contested airspace operations and electronic spectrum dominance.
Northrop Grumman describes the AN/ALQ-251 as part of a broader family of scalable electronic warfare systems, capable of being integrated into a wide range of aircraft platforms. The system’s modular architecture is designed to accommodate future upgrades and counter emerging threats in the radio frequency spectrum.

Shame we disposed of our C130 fleet. They were quite useful beats and far smaller than the A400M beasts.
Ultimately comes down to numbers – you cannot send a limited number of A400M and C17 to as many places as the full fleets of A400M, C17 & C130.
I do understand that the actually weight carry capacity of RAF heavy lift is quite high but IRL that isn’t the only valid metric.
All our allies have kept the C130 as it is a very well understood work horse.

The fact is an Atlas now needing to be doing the task the Herc was doing cannot now be given the tasking it might have done.

Many of the Hercs were used by DSF. What Atlas will be permanently assigned, and given the SF fit that the Hercs had?
This cut angered me more than any other.
It was a political hack job to gain EU favor in the Atlas program. Simple as that. The C-17 is a far more capable air lifter and the UK didn’t need the A400 like other EU countries did, but still played along.
