The Ministry of Defence is stepping up efforts to recruit and retain personnel within the Royal Navy Reserve, according to Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Defence and Veterans, Al Carns.

In response to a written question from Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, Carns emphasised that the Reserve Forces play a vital role in providing “the scale, skills, agility and connection to society that we need, in a cost-effective way.”

He noted that the Royal Navy Reserve is currently benefitting from an active recruitment campaign, particularly across social media channels, aiming to highlight the value and variety of service opportunities available to new recruits.

Key areas of focus for enhancing both recruitment and retention include:

  • Expanding the Maritime Reserves to meet operational needs.
  • Providing meaningful, diverse, and rewarding employment for reservists.
  • Reforming administrative models for Part Time Volunteer Reserves to ensure they remain fit for purpose.
  • Improving selection processes for specialised roles within the Reserves.
  • Developing credible career pathways tailored to long-term service and professional growth.
  • Modernising and increasing flexibility in training pipelines, making it easier for reservists to integrate training with civilian commitments.

The response underscores the Ministry’s ongoing work to ensure the Royal Navy Reserve remains an agile and attractive option for those looking to serve alongside their civilian careers, the effects however remain to be seen.

  1. Maybe increasing the tax free bounty and making it conditional on mobilising for the specified outputs.

Oh, and make being in the reserves something that is considered a big societal plus.

    • Making incentives for employers to not just support staff being reservists but encouraging and incentivising them, for instance a credit against employer NICs if a certain percentage of a site’s workforce earn their bounties. This could then see whole units at a company or shared between a few closely located ones, maybe have employers lending facilities for the units etc

  3. I guess you need to figure out what “presses people buttons” in terms of motivation. That could be “a sense of adventure” or earned status or financial reward. More of any of the above would work.
A lot of kids are burdened by student loan debt and have very little chance of getting on the mortgage ladder. Maybe some sort of scheme which is relatively treasury neutral in the long run such as they offer mortgage assistance to other public sector workers. How about after 3 years service the Treasury will offer to take a percentage share of any first property you buy. So if you want to buy a £200000 house the treasury will take a 3% share totalling £6000 and reduce your contribution to £194000. If you serve for 5 years the contribution will go up to 5% and £10000. On sale of the property the treasury recovers the % of value its has made in the property and will probably end up making money on the deal.
