In a speech delivered at the UN Security Council meeting on December 30, 2024, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Barbara Woodward, strongly condemned the ongoing missile and UAV attacks by the Houthis against Israel, along with their targeting of international shipping in the Red Sea.

Ambassador Woodward expressed deep concern, stating, “The UK is deeply alarmed by the Houthis’ continued missile and UAV attacks against Israel and their ongoing targeting of international shipping in the Red Sea.”

She called for an immediate halt to these actions, emphasising that “there is no justification for these attacks.” The UK condemned what it described as “reckless actions” and noted that the aggression not only risked escalating the regional conflict but was worsening the already dire humanitarian and economic conditions in Yemen.

The UK also underscored the importance of a peaceful resolution, with Ambassador Woodward stating, “A comprehensive and inclusive political settlement remains the best route to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Yemen.” She reiterated the UK’s position on the role of Iran, calling out the country for its longstanding support for the Houthis.

According to Woodward, “Iran bears responsibility for the actions of its proxies, and it must cease its illegal activity which is destabilising the region and threatening international peace and stability.”

The UK’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence was made clear, yet Ambassador Woodward stressed that Israeli actions must adhere to international humanitarian law, particularly in protecting civilians. She also expressed concern over Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s civilian infrastructure, specifically referencing a recent attack on Sana’a airport, which injured a UNHAS crew member and endangered the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, “Humanitarians must be able to carry out their important work safely and securely.”

Ambassador Woodward urged the Houthis to release all detained humanitarian and diplomatic staff, saying, “We call on the Houthis to now fulfil their commitments and immediately and unconditionally release all the detainees.”

The speech concluded with a call for de-escalation and peace, with Woodward affirming the UK’s commitment to ending the conflict, “Further bloodshed and suffering are in no one’s interests. We must break the cycle of violence and deliver long-awaited peace and security for the people of the region.”

  1. Ambassador Woodward then invited the perpetrators to the UK, as it was obvious it wasn’t there fault and we could help them, as long as they voted Labour!

  2. She condemned Israels attack on Sana Airport? Oh silly me, of course these well known humanitarian terrorists would never use innocent civilian infrastructure as a “cover” would they? Honest, this softard attitude is why the west is being laughed at. I think Israel is the only country that smelt the coffee ages ago.

  3. The biggest danger to the West is if our forces have to be split across conflicts in multiple theatres. Iran was capable of creating a regional conflict all on its own through its use of proxies, and if Israel is systematically destroying that capability in the Middle East, it reduces the chances of WW3. So even ignoring the economic benefits of free passage through the Bab-el-Mandeb, it is very much in the interests of the West for the bloodshed and suffering to continue in Yemen a little while longer. NATO should have already “tidied up” this theatre already (yes, by killing lots of people) and been prepared to sit on Iran. We are just too squeemish.

There’s a fine balance between being peaceful and lovey dovey on the one hand (with which I have no problem) and letting the situation escalate to our long-term detriment on the other (with which I do). Neutralising the threat of Iran now could well postpone a global conflict indefinitely. Iran and Russia are our stitch in time.

  4. We should bomb the Yemeni airforce and armoured brigades !!! we can’t, even collectively beat a few musketeer tribesmen from Burma to Mauritania, we will get fu€£ed in a conventional war with any of the big boys, and as soon as America has its hands full guess who’ll get proper fu€£ed by the barbarians.
    Make peace you imbeciles.
