A 16-year-old male has been arrested in Greenock under the Terrorism Act, Police Scotland has confirmed.
The arrest took place outside the Inverclyde Islamic Centre on Laird Street shortly after 9 am on Thursday, January 23.
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Freeburn stated: “Shortly after 9am on Thursday, 23 January, 2025, a 16-year-old male youth was arrested outside the Inverclyde Islamic Centre, Laird Street, Greenock, in connection with offences under the Terrorism Act. The youth remains in custody and enquiries continue.”
Police have indicated that there is no evidence to suggest the involvement of others or any ongoing threat to public safety. Officers are engaging with the local community to provide reassurance.
“We are speaking to members of the local community to provide reassurance and I would urge anyone with information or who has any concerns to please come forward and speak to officers,” Freeburn added.
The investigation is ongoing, and Police Scotland has encouraged anyone with information to contact them.
