A ‘loud bang’ was heard over south-east England as a Typhoon jet scrambled to intercept a civilian aircraft.

a German aircraft lost communication with air traffic controllers was safely diverted to Stansted Airport.

An RAF spokesperson said:

“Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft were launched this afternoon from RAF Coningsby to intercept a civilian aircraft that had lost communications; subsequently, communications were re-established, the aircraft was intercepted and safely escorted to Stansted. The Typhoon aircraft were authorised to transit at supersonic speed for operational reasons.”

RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft monitor aircraft as they approach the UK area of interest. The UK’s Quick Reaction Alert team, which are ready to take off within minutes at any time, have also been sent up in recent months to intercept Russian bombers probing British airspace.

    Perhaps the “journalist” here might like to look at the teams of people working 24/7 to monitor the UK airspace and then provide control to the Typhoons to get them where they need to be?

    Alternatively it must be true that aircraft on the ground are able to monitor aircraft as they approach the UK area of interest…….

  2. Those pilots must be having the days of their lives… any that have served will know the feeling, scared witless and bring it on, all at the same time!
