A US Air Force KC-135R has declared an emergency over the North Sea.

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is a military aerial refueling aircraft.

The Open Source Intelligence Twitter account SkyWatcher Intel is following this, if you don’t follow them then I’d suggest you go do that now.

UPDATE: The aircraft has now landed and the crew are safe.

What is the significance of “Squawking 7700”?

Captain Hoke is a Boeing 757/767 captain for a package express airline and also runs the website AeroSavvy, he had this to say.

“Declaring an emergency means the crew determines they have an ‘urgency’ or ‘distress’ situation. “Urgency” means the crew is concerned about the safety of the flight and needs timely (but not necessarily immediate) assistance. A ‘distress’ condition means that the flight is in serious and/or imminent danger and requires immediate assistance”.

  1. All these ‘sqwuaks’ that have been posted here over the last couple of months make me think they’re training.

There’s been at least half a dozen I can think of. They can’t all be real can they?

  2. I don’t really know why these events are being reported. They are entirely routine and normal. Both military and civilian aircraft run into technical difficulties, it doesn’t mean they are going to drop out of the sky and crash. Some systems can display a caption, and the rule book will say the aircraft has to RTB ect, a quick fix once back on the ground, and you are up and running again.
