Lieutenant Colonel Mike Carty RM has made history as the first Royal Marine to command a fast jet squadron, taking charge of the famed 617 Squadron—also known as the Dambusters.

This milestone was announced in a Royal Navy press release detailing the leadership change within the squadron, which operates the UK’s cutting-edge F-35B Lightning stealth strike fighters.

The Dambusters, one of the most prominent names in UK military aviation history, have a storied past dating back to their pivotal role in World War II. Lt Col Carty’s appointment is significant as he becomes the first Royal Marine to lead any fast jet squadron, a role traditionally held by Royal Air Force personnel.

He steps into this role after 24 years of service in the Royal Marines, where he honed his skills flying Harrier GR9s and F-35Bs, both on operations and as an instructor.

Wg Cdr Stew Cambpell salutes as he hands over command to Lt Col Mike Carty RM

Reflecting on his appointment, Lt Col Carty said, “I am looking forward to the challenges ahead as the squadron continues to build on the great work that has already been done to ensure that we maintain a level of readiness to fly and fight from a land or sea base when required.”

He takes over command after 617 Squadron’s recent deployment in Iceland for NATO air policing duties, a role that saw them operate far from their home base at RAF Marham.

The Royal Navy’s release highlights that Lt Col Carty’s extensive flying experience includes a deployment with the US Marine Corps, for which he was awarded the US Navy Air Medal. His expertise will be crucial as the squadron prepares for upcoming exercises, including Exercise Strike Warrior, which will further test the capabilities of the F-35B and the UK’s Carrier Strike Group.

Lt Col Carty replaces Wing Commander Stew Campbell, who had commanded 617 Squadron for five years. Wg Cdr Campbell praised the hard work of his team, stating, “Serving as the Officer Commanding of 617 Squadron has definitely been the highlight of my career, and it is with immense pride that I hand over command to Lt Col Carty.”
