The National Crime Agency (NCA) has arrested a 17-year-old in Walsall as part of an investigation into a cyber attack targeting Transport for London (TfL).

The teenager was detained on 5th September on suspicion of offences under the Computer Misuse Act, following an incident that affected TfL’s systems starting from 1st September.

The NCA, working alongside the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and TfL, has been managing the response to the incident, aiming to minimise risks.

Deputy Director Paul Foster, head of the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, stressed the seriousness of such attacks, saying, “We have been working at pace to support Transport for London following a cyber attack on their network, and to identify the criminal actors responsible.”

Foster highlighted the potential consequences of attacks on public infrastructure, which can disrupt communities and national systems.

He praised TfL’s quick response, which enabled the NCA to proceed with their investigation. He added, “The swift response by TfL following the incident has enabled us to act quickly, and we are grateful for their continued co-operation with our investigation.” The investigation remains ongoing, with the teenager currently out on bail.

The NCA say it continues to lead efforts to combat cybercrime, including offering resources like the Cyber Choices programme and guiding victims through the Government’s Cyber Incident Signposting Site for incident reporting.
