French and British forces conduct operation over Black Sea

French and British forces carried out a high-profile aerial operation over the western Black Sea this week, showcasing a coordinated display of reconnaissance and air superiority as tensions in the region continue to simmer.

The large-scale sortie included a wide array of aircraft from both nations, operating in tandem to conduct surveillance on Russian military activity.

The mission featured Rafale fighter jets and an E-2 Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft launched from the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, along with Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters, a Rivet Joint RC-135 signals intelligence platform, and tanker support from both nations.

British ‘spy plane’ gathers intelligence near Russian forces

The presence of a French E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control aircraft provided additional coordination and oversight, enabling an extended surveillance envelope across the maritime region.

Flight tracking data revealed multiple aerial refuelling tankers facilitated the extended sortie, allowing fighter escorts and surveillance assets to remain on station for prolonged periods.

Following the operation, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle made a port call in Piraeus, Greece, signalling a routine continuation of its regional deployment. The carrier’s presence in the eastern Mediterranean is part of France’s regular commitment to regional stability and NATO readiness.

The mission’s scale and complexity suggest a clear intent by both London and Paris to maintain pressure on Russia through persistent surveillance and joint deterrence operations.
