In testimony to the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee this week, Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, Commander of United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), spoke of the importance of the United Kingdom’s military engagement in the Indo-Pacific as part of a wider network of U.S. allies and partners.

Admiral Paparo stated that the U.S. alliance system in the region represents a “tremendous asymmetric advantage” and that “no competitor or adversary can match the combined strength and capabilities of this network.” Among those allies, he cited the UK as a vital contributor to regional stability and deterrence.

“U.S. and UK collaboration strengthens security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific through combined and multilateral exercises, AUKUS initiatives, and aligned strategic priorities,” Paparo told lawmakers during the committee’s review of the Fiscal Year 2026 Defense Authorization Request.

He noted the UK’s ongoing deployments in the region, saying, “The UK demonstrates its enduring commitment to the Indo-Pacific through deployments such as the 2021 Carrier Strike Group and the 2025 Operation HIGHMAST, led by UK Carrier Strike Group 25.”

In addition to exercises and deployments, the UK’s logistical and strategic support was also highlighted. “Continued UK support for the U.S. military presence on Diego Garcia remains critical for U.S. national security,” Paparo added.

The Admiral’s comments were made as part of a broader review of U.S. defence posture in the Indo-Pacific, including testimony on U.S. Forces Korea. The hearing focused on strategic deterrence, alliance interoperability, and long-term defence planning in a region marked by heightened tensions with China and North Korea.

The UK’s involvement in initiatives such as AUKUS and Operation HIGHMAST reflects its increased focus on Indo-Pacific security and its position as a key U.S. partner in the region.

    • Way to spin what was actually said.

JD Vance: “Many European nations were correct about the folly of the US-led invasion of Iraq.. they could have done more to oppose Washington over the Iraq War.”

It was in the context of European independence from US decisions, he was praising them for standing on their decision to not go.

      • Thanks for posting the quote, exactly what I said, JD Vance blaming Europe for not stoping the USA invading Iraq. I wonder what action JD would have wanted “Europe” to take. Is he perhaps advocating “Europe” should have sent forces to defend Iraq?

At the time Germany and France were pretty vocal, France threatened to veto any UN agreement to invade.

I’m not sure what else JD thinks they could have done short of going to war, any idea?

        • Does JD have any practical ideas?

Going over ancient history as saying decisions were wrong is hardly going to solve the Trumpian Economic Earthquakes threatening a tsunami of Tangerine Tint hitting the world financial markets…?

        • I guess he shouldn’t attempt to praise European countries for making their own decisions then, which is exactly what he was doing. You guys are totally indoctrinated. Everything that comes from the US admin is spun as bad! bad bad!

JD could cure cancer and the UK would complain about all the doctors out of work.

          • I watched the speech and did not see it as praise,

If that was intended as prise then JD needs to work on his speech writing.

          • Vance is a grade one certified idiot, no sugar coating it!

He helps Trump derive foreign policy based on social media trends, I sincerely doubt he could find his own arse with both hands…

          • French opposition to Iraq war cost France 5 billilons and 25 years of insults. His remakes are totally strange.

          • Indoctrinated by who? The media? you think because people don’t agree with JD Vance it makes them a brain washed zombie of independent news? You talk like an American, are you one?

      • Chris, hard to understand Vance. He was opposed to Trump, then became his right hand man. Now he is rubbishing a decision by a past Republican President to invade Iraq. No party loyalty and too many U-turns.

      • I completely agree Chris. Some people on this forum are so politically partisan that they’ll interpret virtually every noise from the Trump administration as hostile. Some more of what he said:

“I love Europe … I love European people. It’s not good for Europe to be the permanent security vassal of the United States.”
“I think a lot of European nations were right about our invasion of Iraq. And frankly, if the Europeans had been a little more independent, and a little more willing to stand up, then maybe we could have saved the entire world from the strategic disaster that was the American-led invasion of Iraq.”

And Vance has been bang on about the assault on liberties across the EU and UK, as echoed by many institutions and individuals in Europe itself, such as the free speech union in the UK. Maybe we are finally seeing common sense return here too, with the recent Supreme Court ruling etc. The recent MP led enquiry into two tier policy was an absolute joke though, a complete whitewash.

Meanwhile the person the left were pushing to be the leader of the free world less than a year ago, Biden, used outdated language “colored kids” in a speech last week. Remember in 2020 when Greg Davies, head of the FA, used that term and was forced to resign and was effectively cancelled? Well the silence of the left on the Biden speech is deafening.

        • Indoctrinated by who? The media? you think because people don’t agree with JD Vance it makes them a brain washed zombie of independent news? You talk like an American, are you one?

So you did not discovered yet that most journalists are in fact leftist activists?
I have another question for you: why for most journalists Fidel Castro was a Cuban LEADER but Augusto Pinochet was a Chilean DICTATOR ?

          • No, I’m from Northern Ireland.

Indoctrinated by the majority of the media in the UK, which is clearly lacking objectivity. Some programmes are better than others. BBC radio 4 can be good at times, but the rest of the BBC, and virtually everything on free to air TV, is completely unrepresentative of UK public opinion. Just look at coverage of trans issues, immigration, or Palestine for starters. Public commentators from the left are disproportionately over represented.

        • I support your perspective. Northern Ireland is where the European wars of religion are still being fought out. Living in a cauldron produces a clarity of vision unmatched in the UK. As regards the media, Goebbels was spot on, if you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it, and you will even come to believe it yourself. Delusions are more infectious than the truth.

        • Except…..he’s lied and deliberately taken out of context some of these instances of “freedom”…so he’s not “bang on” at all. What assault on liberties are these exactly ? Or are you another “indoctrinated” anti labour fool that thinks nothing needed to be done about riots incited by fake news and hate spread online ?

  3. The only consistency I can discern from Vance is that he has no recognisable intellectual cognitive framework upon which to base any world view. Where I come from he would be labelled a f☆ckwit.

    • He has an Ivy League education, probably the best in the world. Sorry he doesn’t agree with UK censorship or financing the Ukrainians hopeless war while the EU simultaneously finances Russia with gas purchases.

        • Vance is a convert to Catholicism and according to wiki he ‘acknowledges the influence of catholic theology on his sociopolitical positions’; not everyone’s cup of tea perhaps, but certainly a comprehensive philosophical and moral framework.

      • I thought you lot didn’t like Harvard?
Because those people right there, with their Palestine protests and censorship, represent just about the best education on the planet.
        Goes to show, doesn’t it?

      • Are you JD Chris, his brother? Since when does a ‘ivy league’ education means intelligence? You are confusing privilege and money with ability,

        • JD Vance’s mother was a drug addict. He came from abject poverty and ended up being raised by his grandparents. He joined the USMC after school, before going on to earn himself a place at one of the top law schools in the world.

He met his wife, of Indian ancestry, at law school; and had an inter-faith wedding and has mixed race kids, despite many in the left wing media potraying him as a white nationalist /nazi. It’s mind boggling.

          So what is his privilege?

      • Yes it is, tell me something it brings to the table than VTOL and a ship armed with 3 Phalanx? adds a more supplies, but that’s it, its a scaled up HMS Ark Royal ( I am not assaulting any of the sailors or airmen(people) on those vessels )

        • If you think it is just a bigger Invincible, you do not understand its capabilities. The fact itcam operate two squadrons of 5 generation fighters puts it in a totally different league from a light ‘carrier’. Bot to mention its potential for growth. Drones and possibly cats….

You are right about it being under armed it should have a organic SAM system like every other carrier in the world. The should fit the fourth CIWS it was designed to have. It should have Sea Ceptor.

    • Jay, you shouldn’t have said it. The new carriers are so much more than that. For one thing they carry 5th Gen stealth aircraft. Also the QE-class ships are faster, have vastly greater range, higher levels of automation especially munitions handling and carry more RM commandos.

  4. I’ll withhold my like until I discover how many UK F-35B’s are embarked for the key Indo-Pacific leg of the deployment. Also, it’s less than clear if an Astute class submarine will be part of CSG25 for any substantial period. The MOD’s press releases are so vaguely worded that a sub could join up for one day in May and one day in November and still be counted as part of CSG25.

  5. It’s a British vessel… It has the skill set of the best naval sailors in the world. Has the Tango Tantrum said THANK YOU?
