Norway has signed a contract worth approximately USD 922 million to acquire the Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher System (MRLS) from South Korean firm Hanwha Aerospace.

The agreement, signed on 30 January in Oslo between Hanwha Aerospace and the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA), covers the delivery of 16 Chunmoo launchers, a package of precision-guided munitions, and integrated logistics support. The acquisition forms part of a wider Norwegian long-range fires programme with a total budget of around $2 billion.

The Chunmoo system is intended to strengthen Norway’s long-range precision strike capability, particularly in the Nordic and High North region, where Arctic operating conditions place additional demands on reliability and mobility. Hanwha said the system supplied to Norway has been optimised for extreme cold weather and snowy terrain, and will be fully interoperable with Norway’s existing command, control and fire control systems.

The selection builds on nearly a decade of defence industrial cooperation between Hanwha Aerospace and Norway. Since 2017, Hanwha has delivered 52 K9 VIDAR self-propelled howitzers and 14 K10 ammunition resupply vehicles to the Norwegian Army, all of which were delivered on schedule. That programme established the logistics and support framework now being used as a technical reference for the introduction of Chunmoo.

With Norway’s decision, the operational user base of the Chunmoo MRLS now includes South Korea, Poland, Estonia and several Middle Eastern operators, expanding the system’s footprint across Europe. Hanwha has argued that this growing user community could support improved interoperability and shared logistics arrangements among operators.

The company has also indicated plans to deepen cooperation with Norwegian industry, including opportunities for local testing, sustainment activity and future collaboration. Chunmoo is a modular rocket artillery system capable of firing multiple munition types from a single launcher, allowing operators to tailor loadouts for different mission profiles.

  1. I heard that Forrest Trump now wants Norway to help protect Trumpton and the two newest target states of Canada and Greenland.
Svalbard and Jan Mayen would make gret winter retreats and Bouvet Is pretty awesome for birdwatching now that Little St James Island has closed.

It would be logical and the Oil and Gas would be useful too.
