The British Army’s 72 new RCH 155 self-propelled howitzers will be delivered individually rather than in tranches, with deliveries scheduled to take place between 2028 and 2032, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard has told Parliament.
The answer, given on 21 May in response to a written question from Ben Obese-Jecty MP for Huntingdon, clarified the delivery structure of the nearly £1 billion contract awarded by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation on behalf of the British Army to ARTEC GmbH, a joint venture between KNDS and Rheinmetall.
The RCH 155 is a remote-controlled self-propelled artillery system mounted on a BOXER chassis, capable of firing eight rounds per minute at targets up to 70 kilometres away. It can redeploy at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, and its automated turret allows operation by just two soldiers from within the crew compartment. The contract covers 72 systems alongside initial training and in-service support, with a minimal deployable capability to be achieved before the end of the decade.
The programme has significant UK industrial content. Weapon system components including the barrel, breech, recoil system, and trunnions will be manufactured at Rheinmetall’s large-calibre production facility in Telford, using British steel supplied by Sheffield Forgemasters. The BOXER drive module will be manufactured by KNDS UK in Stockport. The programme is expected to create 100 new skilled jobs at the Telford facility, support 100 jobs in Stockport, and back a further 300 across the wider supply chain.
The RCH 155 directly replaces the AS90 self-propelled howitzers donated to Ukraine in 2023. Deputy Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Simon Hamilton described the contract as the first significant milestone in replenishing the resulting capability gap. “Britain answered the call for aid by providing artillery systems to Ukraine at the outbreak of the war. We knew the risk, the gap in our warfighting capability, that this would present.” The Archer artillery system, procured as an interim capability, will continue to serve until the RCH 155 enters service.
Defence Secretary John Healey said the procurement demonstrated that defence spending could serve economic as well as security purposes. “By securing next-generation artillery with Germany, not only are we rearming to strengthen NATO against growing Russian aggression but also creating highly skilled jobs here in Britain.” German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius said the joint procurement showed practical commitment to alliance interoperability. “Together with the United Kingdom, we are demonstrating that we take interoperability within NATO seriously and are putting it into practice.”
The contract builds on the Trinity House Agreement signed between the UK and Germany in October 2024, and follows a £52 million Early Capability Demonstrator contract signed in December 2025 and a £53 million Long Lead Item procurement contract signed earlier this year.

Has the UK officially dropped quoting figures in MPH and Miles now then ?
Think I missed the email. 🤔
We went metric starting in 1965. I don’t think they had email back then 😂
Well They’ve taken a fecking long time changing all the road signs then…. 🤦♂️
Just waiting on the DIP to see if there’s funding to get them changed.
There are no “Signs” of that happening either !
🤭🤣
I’ve gained $17,240 only within four weeks by comfortably working part-time from home. Immediately when I had lost my last business, I was very troubled and thankfully I’ve located this project now in this way I’m in a position to receive thousand USD directly from home. Each individual certainly can do this easy work & make more greenbacks online by visiting

Put it in the 1.5% for defence related stuff.
😁… That’ll end up ⛔
We’re moving towards a hybrid-sign system. Think less physical, more hypothetical signage.
I dont know Halfwit, give somone a furlong and they will take a hectare…
I would answer but I can’t see any mileage in it.
Drum roll please 😂😂😂
I guess we won’t be seeing these driving down the M1… well unless the SNP invade.
It’s good to see us moving at pace on this and it’s better to get them as soon as they are available instead of large batches and the usual pissing around with IOC’s. I still think we should keep our archers in reserve as well though.
I would keep them within the core kit. Gives options and archer is still cutting edge and cost of retaining them can’t be that high considering they have already been purchased.
“At pace” ??????
In military circles two years from order to first delivery is considered at pace, especially for a new system like RCH 155.
It seems to good to be true considering how current programs for the Army are going, but great news if it happens. I guess part of the benefit is the only new piece is the Module which will be made in Germany, the drive modules should just be additional numbers on the current U.K. Boxer production line.
To your point on keeping Archer, agreed, keeping additional reserves that are relatively new and top pieces of kit seems like an easy win, I just wonder if they’ll complete the original plan for 24 for a full regiment once the Swedes move on from the Volvo Tractor Based systems as the Man HX systems come in.
The Archers ability to fit inside the A4000 makes it a very good choice to give the parachute regiment some good artillery.
If anyone thinks these bits of kit will be delivered on time and on budget they are living in a parallel universe
I have feeling Archer will go to Ukraine or be kept for use in places like Norway, etc as its lighter than RCH 155. Any one any idea on what will replace the Light gun and will its number be dropped? we do not need as many and its use is limited in fast contact battle. Ideal for places like Norway, Afghan that type of thing but under ranged and slow in and out of action for drone filled balle space.
Patria NEMO looks like the NATO favorite, and since we are getting CAVS it makes sense
do think we will buy any?
Who knows. There are plenty of rumors but I think only Stormer replacement is anywhere near confirmed as likely to be on CAVS. NEMO isn’t cheap, and unlike L118 it’s not slingable. But on a modern drone saturated battlefield, shoot & scoot under armor seems to be the key, so it’s perhaps the logical replacement.
What will replace stormed? It will be some thing wheeled at a guess but not ruling out may be an Ajax varsity but they are not cheap. Just have to wait and see.
I do nit see the light gun totally be retired as it haz its uses, but nit in flowing battle as uts time in abd out of action is its weakness thst and its range and no guided ammo
Personally I would be happy with Boxer Nemo as on display at DSEI but given the choice AMOS would get my vote.
Is there a debate about whether it goes on Patria or Boxer?
I read Boxer was too pricy so they planned to put it on Patria regards Stormer replacement?
Would make sense. Boxer is too pricy for most things.
That’s why I support a CAVS purchase, for a multitude of supporting roles, much as FV432 remained supporting Warrior.
Army Recognition reported that Babcock plan to make GDAMS in their new Devonport plant; fire it from Jackal, Coyote, Foxhound etc
Lovely. What’s not to like, sovereign, 120mm, built at Devonport?
Any sign of the Army or HMG going for it?
Or will be look for the most expensive solution again, which seems to be a common thing with procurement.
No idea. Not military myself but I can see there might be value in a vehicle portable 120mm mortar that can attach to different wheeled vehicles. Cheaper too I imagine than NEMO.
The 120mm mortar for 7 and 29 was banded around over twenty years ago when I was still in but it never got the legs it’s down to ammo weight at the end of the day
Ukraine have apparently ordered 54 RCH 155 ahead of UK (72) and a proposed 229 for Germany.
Why would we donate the Archers to UKR when we need them for 16AAB and we are seemingly short of 155s anyway?
Why is simple, cost saving. Sensible no but that’s a different question.
Because they were only bought as a stop gap, and although they are very good for 16AAB, thats would be too sensible , lets wait and see
Can you get RCH155 in the back of an A400M ? Looks too tall to me . I know you can Archer as the barrel folds down behind the cab , also goes under quiet small bridges too.
I think not, but do not quote me on that. It’s also a weight issue Rch is too heavy.
Because the Ukrainians are already fighting the Russians, whereas we’re not yet…
Can be underslung by a Chinook, and I assume a Merlin?
So ok for Paras and Marines, 7 RHA, 29 RA.
The army reserve use it as well, as AS90 wasn’t used to them.
For its light role it is a great gun but ts 17200 m range is poor, and no guided rounds, as an air transportable type role it is ideal , for armoured warfare its not, too many are in service out side of its inteneded role and that was done to save money by going light. A very bad choice and made by a man who should of know better,
You’re correct. Until recently, when 3 RHA went over to MLRS, Both 3 RHA and 4 RA, both of which were AS90 Regiments until they were cut, used Light Gun. When the gun was part of the embryonic Strike Brigades it was farcial.
Archer is going to 4th regiment
Yeah some one serving told me that, i hope they keep it, even when RCH 155 comes in to service, but thats just a hope.
Yup rch will be 1rha and 19 some at 14 and rsa for training half the archer are kept in Estonia I do know they’re cannibalising some of the archer in larkhill to keep them o on the road one was rolled out on the plain I know the dad of the number one
thats not good taking parts of the few we have, i do not see it being kept on, cheaper to just pass whats left to Ukraine as they have some already.
As an (I think) interesting note, this equipment massively reduces the requirement for gun crews from 5 or 6 to 3 people. However, those three start at Bombadier rank (Drop-short Cpl) because of the roles in the crew. So at the moment, the RA are genuinely working out how to get soldiers to sufficient experience and qualification to crew this highly automated system. Their career structure and training will need to be redesigned.
with only two crew per vehicle, i imagine that when they are laying up, vehicles will have to group together to give enough bodies to do everything needed such as keeping watch etc?
It might only take 2 to fire the thing, but I am thinking the actual crew will be bigger to resupply, re-arm, maintain etc. Plus as has been pointed out before there are other duties such as guard duty, comms etc. I would guess it’s going to require another vehicle of some kind. Bit like when I worked the jammers back in the days. Had the big Jammer truck with 2 in it and then a landrover with another 2.
I understand it’s a crew of three , Comd, Bdr and driver. Two in the hull and the driver up front?
Is that 2 crew min, or are there only two seats? be bad for stagging on and maintance etc
“Minister for Defence Rediness” is this some sort of joke title irobically bestowed in the biggest dickhead of the month?
Spot on
Arriving just in time for the war with Russia that Starmer, Mers and Macron keep telling us we must have with them
