According to a press release, HM Naval Base Clyde welcomed the holiday season with a variety of festive events on 10 December, aimed at spreading Christmas cheer among personnel and raising funds for charity.

The day’s activities, say the Royal Navy, began with the annual Santa Dash, where participants, including individual runners and teams from departments like the Dental Department, 43 Commando Royal Marines, and the Unit Personnel Office, donned festive attire to complete a mile-and-a-half course starting and ending at the Supermess.

The event saw a colourful array of costumes, from traditional Santa hats to creative outfits like a Christmas cracker, a snowman, a present, and even a turkey. Captain Elaine Boyd, Captain of the Base, flagged off the runners and cheered them on as they crossed the finish line.

The festivities continued with the Snowball Race, organised by Natalie Lewis of the Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC). Participants purchased numbered snowballs for the race, vying for a £1,000 cash prize while contributing to a cause. The event raised £4,430, with proceeds supporting sailors, marines, and their families.

“The Snowball Race has been an incredible event,” said Natalie. “We’re thrilled to share that we’ve raised over £4,000, which will go directly to supporting our sailors, marines, and their families. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed—you’ve truly made a difference!”

For the first time, the base hosted a Christmas market in the Supermess, featuring local crafts, holiday gifts, and food stalls. Vendors like Knots & Crafts and Submarine Souvenirs contributed to the festive atmosphere, with part of their earnings donated to the RNRMC.

Meanwhile, Coulport staff participated in a Christmas quiz, organised by Linda Haworth of Lockheed Martin UK. The proceeds from the quiz were donated to the Ardgowan Hospice in Inverclyde, supporting those in need of care.
