The Royal Navy have confirmed that the names of two new fast patrol boats, which will be based in Gibraltar, will be HMS Dagger and HMS Cutlass.
According to a news release, Dagger is a name new to the Royal Navy.
“It was due to have been assigned to a weapon-class anti-submarine escort in late World War 2. But, the conflict ended and the ship was cancelled. Only one previous HMS Cutlass has served under the White Ensign. During the 1970s with her sisters Scimitar and Sabre, not the same vessels which later served in Gibraltar.
She was used to train Royal Navy and NATO warships to deal with the threat of fast missile/torpedo craft as part of the First Fast Training Boat Squadron.”
The Royal Navy also provided the following stats on the craft.
- Powered by 3x Volvo D13-1000 engines (each producing 1,000hp) and 3x MJP350X water jets
- 6 crew (plus 6 passengers)
- up to 40 knots
- initially will carry 3x purpose machine gun (1 on fore deck, 2 off deck), will be fitted for (but not with) the 0.50cal heavy machine guns
- Length: 19.0m.
Bravo, edged weapons seems a good naming convention for patrol boats – BMT have a family of these patrol boat designs of assorted sizes, many in use by Bahrein and Qatar. Can see them replacing P2000s in due course.
“Fitted for (but not with)” How much fitting for does a 50 cal actually require ? Is there a big cost saving ? …. just asking out of genuine interest until the Daily Star runs an article along the lines of “Royal Navy shows off it’s latest Battleships” !!! ( it’s a joke BTW just in case anyone a bit dim doesn’t realise ).
I don’t what the hype about 50 Cals are. like 20mms do more damage plus more penetration!
Size and stabilty of the platform will depend on the weapon fit and the 20mm would seem to large to be fitted, ammo storage etc. Trust me, there’s no hype about the 50 cal, it’s a fucking beast, one which is accurate and has a stunning capacity to penetrate, and in single shot it’s very accurate and very cost effective.

The RN operators have been crying out for it for years as we saw the RMs using it.
Inversley, the RM operators where crying out for the RNs mini guns because of the insane volume of fire they put out to suppress and chew stuff up.
Either way the RN has 50 cals on most platforms now and the RM could fit mini guns to ORKs if they wanted to.
Now if the RN had 3 barrel 50 cal Gecal gatling guns…. 🤗
Likewise seeing the Chinook miniguns in action on approach, always wanted one. Get the “predater” version, man mounted with big cigar and airborne tash!
And how about helmet mounted CAMM missiles, with shoulder launched land attack missile. Should keep the naysayers about weaponry and armament happy 😁.

20mm RWS is a far better solution for boats
Realy, loved it myself, solid, clunky and an ideal FSG weapon, a heavy round with a decent effect at range, although ammo quality could be an issue, as with cleanilness. Now L129, beautiful, how long did it take to realise that 7.62 is needed to cover the 400-800 metre engagements. 5.56 was never a decent option, for NATO, at any level. Always remember the SLR (old git I know) accurate, effective and can put people down. Cheers.

Personally, l think these boats should be unarmed and painted bright red. Why would we want to frighten nice Spanish people with aggressive battleships? Putting weapons of mass destruction such as GPMG’s on things can only invite trouble.
And as for having diesel engines? They should have masts and sails with solar power. It is very unimaginative to have Doris saying one thing to the world and the navy doing the opposite.
You should start a petition to have the frigate fleet return to sail power and good ol’ cannon. Helicopters and missiles are far too polluting to form the main armament of a green warship, plus current ships only have a single main gun!

I’ll await the backlash but surely the aim of any class of armed fighting ship is not to match the probable threat but to overpower the probable threat its tasked with dealing with. If the threat is terrorism or drug smugglers etc armed with AK’s and GPMG then having something next level up to overpower the threat relatively safely for the crew…..in line with the principles of ALARP…. should apply to the duty of care of the crew.
Hello mate, I guess it’s all a bit of a Grey area in the case of these two though, It’s not like Spain is Aggressive other than a few little digs and pokes, I guess the real threat would be Terrorists/Special Forces from other States in which case they would be Ideal around Gib Waters.

Ammo stowage wise no real difference. 7.62 comes in a slab of 8 thin H83 boxes, 50 cal comes in a single H82 box, same length and height but double the width of a H83.

The harpoon has been replaced with, er, another harpoon, but this one with lower in service maint costs, although the 200 metre rope behind it will need greasing every now and then…
