Japan sends personnel to NATO Ukraine support hub

Japan has finalised a contribution of personnel to the NATO command in Germany that coordinates security assistance and training for Ukraine, a step the alliance describes as a further consolidation of Tokyo’s long-standing partnership with NATO.

The contribution, confirmed on 29 May 2026, is to NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine, known as NSATU. The command coordinates the provision of military equipment and training to Ukraine by NATO member and partner countries, and is based in Wiesbaden, Germany. NATO says NSATU continues to provide essential support to Ukraine through that coordinating role.

According to Japan’s Defence Ministry, the deployment involves four Self-Defense Forces officers and marks the first time Japan has sent personnel to the command. The officers comprise two from the Ground Self-Defense Force, one from the Air Self-Defense Force and one from the Maritime Self-Defense Force, and they will help coordinate the provision of equipment and training for Ukraine’s military and serve as liaisons with partner countries.

The ministry stressed that the officers will not take part in combat operations, consistent with the limits Tokyo has placed on its military’s role since the Second World War.

NSATU was established to put Western support for Ukraine on a more durable footing. The command was launched in July 2024 to coordinate military aid deliveries and training for Ukrainian forces, drawing together work that had been led by the United States and placing it within a NATO framework. NATO says the command operates only on Allied territory and does not, under international law, make the alliance a party to the conflict, with logistical hubs located in the eastern part of the alliance and the headquarters reporting through NATO’s senior European command.
