NATO has successfully completed the first iteration of exercise Ramstein Alloy 24-1 for the year 2024, an air policing drill hosted by Estonia on April 22 and 23.

This year’s exercise, dubbed ‘Super Alloy’, saw the participation of around 20 fighter and support aircraft from six Allies.

Squadron Leader Craig Docker, the Ramstein Alloy planning officer at NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) in Uedem, Germany, highlighted the scale and significance of the exercise in a press release.

“The first Ramstein Alloy iteration in 2024 can be considered a Super Alloy, as it involved 20 fighter jets from six Allies, two early warning and control aircraft, and three air-to-air refuelling aircraft,” he explained.

“Having such a huge range of assets available enables integrated and multinational training including cross-border and hand-over procedures. These enhance achieving realistic training objectives that Allied forces have to apply on a daily basis to ensure NATO skies are safe and secure,” he added.

The exercise involved a diverse array of air assets including jets from Spain and Germany, joined by aircraft from Finland, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden, along with Estonian support aircraft.

Over the two days, the aircraft conducted combined flying training exercises in the airspace over the Baltic States and Sea. This included tactical control by the Estonian Control and Reporting Centre, the German Deployable Control and Reporting Centre, and two early warning and control aircraft from NATO and Türkiye.

Additionally, three air-to-air refuelling aircraft from the Multinational MRTT Unit, Germany, and Spain participated to extend the operational range and endurance of the participating fighters.

Who knows but I would love it if the rainbow codes were brought back for projects.
