In a post shared on social media, NATO Maritime Command has reaffirmed its vigilance in monitoring Russian naval activities in the Mediterranean, stating: “We. Are. Watching.”

The message, posted on 30 December 2024, follows the Portuguese Navy’s recent efforts to escort Russian naval forces as they navigated through the region.

The operation involved close monitoring of the ships by NATO’s Maritime Operations Center, with the Portuguese Navy’s NRP Álvarez Cabral and NRP Sines ships accompanying the Russian vessels during their passage along the European Economic Zone (EEZ). NATO stressed that such operations are critical in ensuring the continued security and stability of the Mediterranean, where geopolitical tensions have been on the rise.

A tweet from NATO Maritime Command highlighted the importance of maintaining constant surveillance: “NATO Allied Maritime Command’s ever-present coordinated efforts with regional allies and partners ensures the defense and security of the maritime environment 24/7/365.”

In addition to these developments, NATO’s Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMCMG2) continues to carry out operations aimed at maintaining readiness. The group’s flagship, TCG Yzb. Güngör Durmuş of the Turkish Navy, recently conducted small arms fire training and fire-fighting drills to enhance operational capabilities, as shared on 26 December 2024.

This activity, part of regular NATO drills, is designed to keep the fleet prepared for any unforeseen incidents at sea.

NATO’s commitment to the region reflects the broader strategic objective of maintaining security and readiness in international waters, particularly as Russian naval activity continues to grow in prominence.

  1. How about.

“We are sinking you and yours if you continue to disrupt our undersea cable connectors. Be prepared to become artificial reefs and seafood.”

There are no good Russians, just dead ones.

    • Isn’t the issue that hybrid war includes civilian vessels not just military vessels?

The purpose of the RF shadow fleet is to be so cheap and disposable that it doesn’t matter if they sink or are impounded for misbehaving…

The use of Flags of Convenience enables evasion of responsibility for environmental impact along with obscured ownership.

The only rational response is to impound and scrap such uninsured and unserviceable vessels using their cargo value to pay for those activities.

Thus the RF shadow fleet is removed and sanctions enforced at minimum cost to taxpayers.
