The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the European Common Radar System Mk2 (ECRS Mk2) programme remains on schedule, with initial flight tests of the prototype successfully completed and development of the production-standard radar continuing as planned, according to a written response published on 30 April 2025.

Responding to a question from James Cartlidge MP (Conservative – South Suffolk), Defence Minister Maria Eagle stated: “The European Common Radar System Mk2 prototype system has completed a successful initial flight test campaign demonstrating maturity in key capability areas.”

The ECRS Mk2 radar is being developed for the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon fighter aircraft and is designed to deliver a step change in capability, including enhanced electronic warfare functionality and greater survivability in contested airspace.

The system will allow RAF Typhoons to detect, identify, and track multiple air and ground targets simultaneously, while also enabling them to suppress and defeat enemy air defences.

Eagle confirmed that development of the production-standard system “remains on track,” underscoring the programme’s importance to both UK air power and NATO interoperability. The radar is a cornerstone of the Typhoon’s continued relevance into the 2030s and beyond, complementing upgrades to sensors, weapons, and mission systems.

Led by Leonardo UK, the ECRS Mk2 is one of the most advanced fighter radar systems being developed in Europe, with its integration set to maintain the RAF’s combat edge as part of the Future Combat Air System roadmap.

  2. Given the success of this project is seen as essential for the Typhoon to “remain relevant”, perhaps the MoD is holding off on placing orders for further Typhoons until this is available/works?…

    • The only talk of further Typhoon orders seems to be on these forums. It does seem to be the most logical option though, given the retirement of the T1’s.

      • I seem to remember that a junior minister was reported as dropping a very big hint about more Typhoons 2 or 3 months ago and it was reported on here. It was in connection with the need to keep Warton busy in the run up to Tempest production, but we are also in discussions with the US for more F-35B, so maybe a slip of the tongue? Not as if it hasn’t happened before.

My guess is we might find out when that damned quick turn around SDR finally appears…

        Cheers CR
PS. I haven’t found any quick money making scheme, grrrrr!

    • And if i remember correctly, if this is successful why not update more than just 40 sets? Wouldn’t another 40 be money well spent?
