APT31, a China state-affiliated actor, was almost certainly responsible for targeting UK parliamentarians’ emails in 2021.
The UK government has called out China state-affiliated actors (Monday) for carrying out malicious cyber activity targeting UK institutions and individuals important to our democracy.
The National Cyber Security Centre – a part of GCHQ – assesses that the China state-affiliated cyber actor APT31 was almost certainly responsible for conducting online reconnaissance activity in 2021 against the email accounts of UK parliamentarians, most of whom have been prominent in calling out the malign activity of China.
Separately, the compromise of computer systems at the UK Electoral Commission between 2021 and 2022 has also been attributed to a China state-affiliated actor.
The NCSC assesses it is highly likely the threat actors accessed and exfiltrated email data, and data from the Electoral Register during this time.
Honestly the CCP and china are the stupidest most ham-fisted operators since the abwerh and the nazis in ww2. What could you possibly hope to gain through vote manipulation in the UK when all major parties are united in their approach to Beijing. Doing stuff like this much like flying a spy balloon over the USA gets you nothing and just serve to antagonise those around you. And yet we are still sending £100s millions in aid to China, absolutely barking!
The Rt Hon J Heapy MP has a point, if we diverted some £ 6-7 billion in squandered/wasted aid to defence for several years, we would be at approx 3% of GDP and able to fund defence properly without having to borrow or raise taxes….
Well that,s them told, they won’t be up to no good again after such a strong response, good thing we stood up to them and were not feeble or weak. Or just about did nothing.
