The US Department of the Air Force has selected three companies to potentially develop and operate nuclear microreactors on military installations as part of its Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations initiative, pairing each firm with a specific base, according to the Air Force.

Radiant Industries has been paired with Buckley Space Force Base in Colorado, Westinghouse Government Services with Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana, and Antares Nuclear with Joint Base San Antonio in Texas.

The service also confirmed Joint Base San Antonio as a third potential location for the programme, alongside Buckley and Malmstrom which were announced on 8 April.

The initiative aims to have at least one advanced nuclear reactor operating on at least one Air Force installation by 2030 or sooner. Next steps include siting and environmental analyses as part of the National Environmental Policy Act process.

Michael Borders, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Energy, Installations and Environment, said the future of air and space dominance was powered by resilient energy, adding that by integrating advanced nuclear technology the department was “not just keeping the lights on” but guaranteeing that “our most critical national security missions will never be held at risk by a power outage.” He described it as “a pivotal moment for the Department of the Air Force.”
