Latvia orders Saab air defence systems in new deal

Latvia has signed a framework agreement with Saab for the delivery of the RBS 70 NG short-range ground-based air defence system, according to a company announcement on 31 March 2025.

The agreement includes an initial order worth SEK 2.1 billion (£157 million), with deliveries scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2030.

According to Saab, the contract includes firing units, missiles, and associated trainer systems, aimed at enhancing the Latvian National Armed Forces’ ability to detect and counter aerial threats.

“Saab continues to support the Latvian National Armed Forces with a strong ground-based air defence capability which will significantly enhance its crucial ability to detect and engage aerial threats,” said Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics.

The RBS 70 NG is a man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) designed to engage a wide range of targets, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. It features an automatic target tracker and a built-in night sight, offering effective engagement ranges of up to nine kilometres.

Latvia’s investment in the RBS 70 NG comes amid wider regional efforts to strengthen air defence capabilities in response to increased security concerns across Eastern Europe. The system is already in service with several NATO member states, and its modular design allows for integration with broader air defence networks.
